Area nearby that's a must see?

My husband and I are coming from Nice France and wondering if there is any place that we must see before arriving at Cinque Terre.

Thanks for your advice!

Well, besides Monaco, the gorgeous coast in France, the cities of Ventimiglia, Savona, San Remo, the Italian Rivera Ponente, the incredible Genoa, the charming villages of Portofino and Camogli...you're taking about one of the most beautiful stretches of coast in the world that spans 3 countries and is full of history, so yes.

There are many, many things to see along this incredible stretch of coast. It would help if you would say how much time you have, what mode of transport you are using, and what your interests are to get a better answer for your question.

We are going for a week in early October. We are deciding between driving and taking the train. Thanks for your advice! Initially I thought two days in southern France then heading into Italy for 5 days (flying out of Florence).

Note that, if driving, the rental charge for cars rented in France and returned in Italy can be excessive, as you pay the costs to the rental company of returning the car to France. When comparing the cost, remember also that tolls and fuel between Nice and Florence will cost around €100, more than the train fares for two.

Nevertheless, if cost isn't an issue, in such a very short time-frame renting a car could be pleasant, particularly as October is not a month in which you will encounter too many traffic and parking issues (except in cities at peak commuting times).

If going by train, every coastal town between Nice and the Cinque Terre is well-served (except tiny Portofino, reached by bus from Santa Margherita Ligure). French trains run typically every 30 minutes from Nice to Ventimiglia where you change onto Italian trains. From Ventimiglia, Regional trains serve every small place, and there are also Intercity trains to Genoa, and from Genoa to Monterosso.
