Bologna on the weekend...

Wondering if anyone can offer insight into whether Bologna is a place where it is good to be on the weekend or best avoided...

Planning our itinerary for 3 weeks in Italy and at the moment we will be in Bologna Saturday lunchtime to Monday lunchtime. Is Bologna going to be a bit dead or the other extreme - too busy - or just the right amount of buzz? Is it a weekend destination that is targeted so tends to be packed or is it overly quiet on the weekend and better to try to visit during the week?

We are 2 fiftyish couples who want to sample some of the good food in Bologna and walk it off looking around in between! We would like to experience Bologna at it's best!

The pedestrianised zone in the city centre is extended on Sat and Sundays making it even nicer to walk around. It will be a bit quieter on Sundays but still lots of people out and about, especially if the weather is good. A lot of the smaller shops close daily at lunchtime to late afternoon and all day Sunday. When we were there end of April/May we found more shops open on Sundays than on our first visit 4 years ago. Check any restos that you may want to visit because you could find that their hours are diiferent on Sundays eg open for lunch but not dinner or vice versa or even closed all day.

Check the tourist info site to see what's on during the weekend.

We find it a busy but laid back city with very friendly people. Maybe that's why we plan to be back next year for our fifth holiday there!
