Zurich /Bologna/ Verona/ Milan

Arriving in Zurich on May 15th to stay in Lucerne. From there we will take the train to Bologna, stay a few days and then go to Verona for a few days. We fly back to the U.S. from Milan.

Our issue is that the days we were going to spend in Bologna coincide with a big convention that is driving the cost of lodging WAY up! We are looking at possible revamping the order of our visits so that we are not in Bologna 5/20 - 5/24. We wanted to end up in Verona so that we are closer to Milan for our last leg of the trip. Any suggestions?

It depends on your reasons for going to Bologna, if you are flexible about staying somewhere else. you could perhaps go to Ravenna instead of Bologna, and do Bologna as a day-trip.

Ravenna was the last Capital of the Western Roman Empire for 74 years. Then Capital of the Ostrogoth Kingdom, reconquered by the Byzantines (Eastern Roman Empire), and then conquered by the Lombards, who gave it to the Papacy. So it does offer things to see.

Another alternative could be to set up camp in Parma, and again do a day-trip to Bologna.

Thanks! We want to go to Bologna becauses we've never been and we want to experience the food we hear is so good. I'll get out the maps tomorrow and look at the distances, train routes, etc. But avoiding having to stay in Bologna just may be the trick.

Thank you!

While Verona is certainly closer to Milan in distance, it is further away in time by train, as the train line from Bologna to Milan is so very much faster - it takes from one hour and five minutes!

We stayed in Bologna for 2 nights in November and we found a lovely bed and breakfast right in center of Bologna, it is called Mua (look at my review). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and their prices are the same all year round, not cheap but for what you get it is worth the price. Contact them, you never know. Enjoy your holiday.
