Trenitalia is retiring its last Eurostar Italia (ES) trains

Beginning Sunday, December 9, 2012, Trenitalia is retiring its last three Eurostar Italia ("ES") trains, which operated between Roma Termini and Reggio Calabria, and Roma Termini and Foligno/Falconara Marittima/Rimini/Ravenna.

The three "ES" trains on these routes will be replaced by Frecciabianca trains (Roma/Reggio Calabria will continue to also have several Intercity and one Frecciargento train).

For the Winter 2012/2013 schedule, there will be a total of 226 (roundtrip) Freccia trains: 84 Frecciarossa, 58 Frecciargento, and 84 Frecciabianca. These fast trains will reflect increased service on many routes, as is more fully explained in the hyperlinked press release:

www.fsnews.it/cms/v/index.jsp…

In addition, the older and cheaper Intercity trains will continue to operate on many medium and long-distance routes within Italy (including between Rome and Sicily).

The era of the Eurostar Italia train is over!!!!!

Thanks for this update - very helpful to know!

I suppose people will still continue to use the term "Eurostar," however.

Hi GAC,

Would very much appreciate your opinion - What impact do you think this will have on train travel to Sicily?

Thank you!

To answer Vagabonda's question above, I would say none for the time being. There is a possibility, perhaps, that the Frecciabianca service might continue to Sicily in the future. However, because the rail line in Sicily is so slow (and only a single track along many corridors), it does not really lend itself to being upgraded for the Frecciabianca.

On a related matter, it is interesting to note that most of the Intercity trains now connect northern Italy with the "deep South" (including Sicily). Because fares are lower on the Intercity trains, there remains demand for them from locals who don't want to pay more for the faster trains. Nevertheless, the number of Intercity trains has been declining of late.

Thanks GAC - I value your opinion and assessment. I was hopeful that the service might improve for Sicily.

Except in Le Marche, where the Intercity trains have replaced ES trains.
