Rome football violence in Campo de' Fiori

Here are two articles about the violence at the Drunken Ship. The article in Italian has photos of the pub before and after the gang attack.

It turns out this morning that some of the attackers arrested were Roma fans.

There were racist chants at the actual match last night as well.

Very sad.

It was absolutely scandalous. I read that both Roma and Lazio fans were involved. I think they need to devise some punishment that will hit the fan clubs in the only place they understand, such as banning the teams from championships for a few years. I know the teams themselves may not be to blame, but they do subsidize these fan clubs and have to bear some responsibility. It would be an important sign if the teams themselves did a bit of autocriticism. Fan racism has been an ongoing problem, and it's time to do something drastic about it.

Neither of the articles above mention that the focus was specifically antisemitism; apparently Tottenham has a reputation as being a "Jewish" club.

At the very least, the match should have been forfeited.

The scale of this attack has shocked everyone I know in Rome. It now seems that both Roma and Lazio fans were involved ..... which means they are not fans, but hooligans/racists. The historic link of Spurs to the Jewish district of London often generates anti-semitic chants and racism, but this seems to have been well organised in advance by far-right groups.

Italy needs to deal with its football violence and clean it up in the way that England did 20 years ago. Maybe this will create some political desire to tackle this problem.

PS - Don't let this event put you off Rome.
