 Rome with Kids

We'd like to visit Rome with 2 boys(7 and 8 years old) in October for about 5 days. By plane. We are looking for a kind hotel/appartment. We have never been before in Italy/Rome. What is a good neighbourhood to stay with children? Of course we are going to visit the Colosseum. But all advise is welcome about do's en dont's with children in Rome. Also tips for kind restaurants. Does anyone know why Rome is more expensive at the end of Octobre as in July/August? This is what I've noticed while surfing arround.

Thank you.

Bear in mind that most Italians love kids - let me qualify that ADORE kids! You won't find a problem with them in any restaurant I know, and what child doesn't like pasta, pizza and ice cream, which you will find everywhere.

I can't think of any area unsuitable for children except ones you wouldn't like for yourself, i.e. too far from the centre.

I wouldn't recommend doing the Vatican with boys that age, but I'm guessing their imagination will be fired up by the Colosseum, and it would probably be worthwhile doing a tour to bring it to life for them.

The zoo (Bioparco) is great fun too, it's not huge but it's well designed, with several enclosures having those huge glass wall where you can get up close and personal with the animals.

Warn the kids about those pesky rose sellers, trinket sellers and toy sellers, who will have no compunction about placing their wares in their all too eager hands and then demand you buy them.

Rome can wear the average adult out as there is so much to see on foot, so plan your days carefully, and maybe take a hop on, hop off bus to orientate youselves with the city.

To get the most out of your trip, why not set the boys a project on the city,on the gladiators for example, before you leave? They should get a kick out of actually visiting the places they have found out about beforehand - just an idea, the most important thing is that you all have fun together.

In my experience, High Season in Rome is from April through October.

You might consider this book: "Rome With Kids" by JM Pasquesi ( www.romewithkids.com )

Here are some other ideas:

Have a great trip!

Are you looking for a convenient location? Then look for something in the historic center - Pantheon, Campo de Fiori, Piazza Navona. The children can run around in the piazzas, most of which are car-free. If you're looking for more green space, consider something on the Aventine or in nearby Testaccio.

An apartment will always give you more space for less money than a hotel will. But you won't have the services of a concierge or a maid. Some reputable agencies are Roman Reference, Sleep in Italy and, for more budget apartments, Real Rome.

There is a book called Rome with Kids; you can order it from www.amazon.co.uk

July is hot and muggy in Rome; in August, many shops and restaurants are closed. This is why many hotels offer reduced rates. September and, to a somewhat lesser degree, October are considered prime months to visit Rome.

I second or third the suggestion that you buy "Rome With Kids". It is the very best guide book written for children..of all ages. It will make Rome come alive for your children and make seeing it fun.

This book has children friendly retaurants and child friendly hotels.

Rome is a great place to go with kids. We got married in rome 2 years ago and had 60 guests, including kids of all ages with us. They loved it. The Italians love children and as other posters have said they were welcomed in all the restaurants we went to.

I would suggest you visit borghese park with the kids. The zoo is in borghese park but there are other things to do there too.

You can hire bikes and cycle around the park. We hired bicyclesthat had baskets on the front for the younger kids. The smallest little guy who was nearly 2 at the time sat in the basket on front of the bike shouting "mush, mush" as we cycled around the park. The older kids loved it too and thought the little guy shouting "mush" was hilarous.

They loved going to gelato shops and deciding which flavours to try.

The colleseum was a hit, as was the open top bus tour. If you get your ticket on the first day and stay on for the complete journey around first, the kids will get an overview of whats there to see and do and can decide what interests them. It will also help you to get oriented as to where things are in relation to your hotel etc.

Thanks for all your advices.

I've booked the flight for the end of oktober.

Now i'm looking for a place to stay.

We prefer a walking distances to the most "highlights" of Rome.

Who has experience with the Bavaria Hostel?

Kind regards.

No experience, but the Web site of Hostel Bavaria looks nice.

It's within easy walking distance of ancient Rome (Forum, Colosseum). It's walkable to the historic center, but you might prefer to take a bus.

Your kids will surely love:

- Bioparco http://www.bioparco.it/forma//attivita/attivita_ID1373.php(as someone has already suggested)

- Explora http://www.mdbr.it/inglese/ (Flaminio stop by Metro A)

- Zoomarine www.zoomarine.it/Default.aspx… (it is outside in Torvaianica but you can reach it by train)

My daughters love to eat in the Hard Rock Cafè in Via Veneto (you can reach it by Metro A) or in any Pizzeria in Trastevere

Rome is more expensive in April, May, June, September and October because in July and August is really too hot and tourists do not come to visit it and moreover in August Romans go on holidays so many shops and services are closed or not available...

We just recently visited with our two children (9 and 12 year old). We never seemed to have any trouble finding child-friendly places but the one suggestion I would give is pacing yourself.
