Rome 3 Day Itinerary - Appreciate Your Feedback

My daughter and I are traveling to Italy later this month and trying to finalize our itinerary by city. As this is our first time visiting, very interested in your feedback.

Following is what we have put together for Rome:

We arrive approx. 10pm on a Thursday evening and are staying in the Trastevere area.

Day 1 (Friday)

Palatine Hill/Forum/Colosseum

Considering an On/Off Double Decker Tour Bus - interested in your thoughts?

Day 2 (Saturday)

Vatican Museums/Sistine Chapel/St. Peter’s Basilica (climb the steps to the dome)

I've heard the Vatican is busier on Saturday, but I'm thinking based on other feedback that it is better to do on Day 2? Any feedback on switching our Day 1 and Day 2 or leaving as is?

I am considering booking with a tour group (such as Through Eternity) to help with lines, etc.

Day 3 (Sunday)

Considering a side trip to Anzio to visit the beach (my daughter's request ... although we will be in Venice later in our trip and could visit a beach outside of Venice - interested in your thoughts on this as well - which might be better?)

If we don't do the beach, this would be our Day 3 itinerary ... if we do the beach, we'd want to look at how to work these in across our days in Rome:

Piazza Navona

Pantheon

Trevi Fountain

Spanish Steps

Piazza di Spagna

Via del Corso or Via Condotti (shopping)

Piazza Venezia, Piazza del Popolo

The Borghese Gardens & the Pincian overlook

Day 4 (Monday)

We also have some time in the morning on Day 4 (Monday) - our train departs at 12:50 for Florence.

Campo de’ Fiori?

And of course we want to enjoy wonderful Italian food, some nice wine, gelato and this wonderful treat I've read about, grattachecca

(We will be in Florence for 3 full days + partial traveling days and we will be in Venice 2 full days + partial traveling days - I'm sure I'll be looking for feedback on those itineraries soon too!)

Any input appreciated. Grazie mille.

If you go to the beach, here's how I would break down the other things you want to see:

Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Trevi fountain. These are all near one another, and it's a nice walk between them, well signposted, and on pedestrian-only streets. You could really see all three in an hour and a half, or maybe even less. Start at either Piazza Navona or Trevi fountain.

Via Condotti, Piazza di Spagna, Spanish steps, Borghese gardens. The Spanish steps are a bit underwhelming, but at least you can say you saw them. Walk to the top, and then turn left and walk along the road with the trees and gardens on your right. This will take you to an entrance to the Borghese gardens near the Pincian overlook. From there, you can wander all over the gardens.

Any beach is likely to be extremely crowded on a Sunday. There is a beach nearer Rome at Ostia Lido, if your daughter just wants to see a beach and dip her toes in the Mediterranean. I would suggest going to the beach very early in the morning to avoid the crowds, who tend to start arriving around 9. It might be easier to do this in Venice; I'm not sure. Anzio is about an hour from Rome's Termini station. Lido di Ostia is maybe half an hour closer. You catch a commuter train from the Ostiense station, which is at the Piramide metro stop.

Another thought. If we wanted to add in Piazza di San Giovanni in Laterano and the Holy Steps, where would you place that? Grazie.

I realized that I left out a few piazzas on my previous itinerary. Piazza Venezia is near the Roman Forum. You could stop there before going to the Forum and then continue along Via dei Fori Imperiali to get to the Forum. San Giovanni in Rotondo is about a 20-minute walk southeast of the Colosseum, along Via San Giovanni in Rotondo.

Piazza del Popolo is right below the Pincian Overlook. You could enter the Villa Borghese at the entrance to the left of the Spanish steps, then walk through the garden and end up at the Pincian overlook, then go down the steps to Piazza del Popolo. Do go into the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, which has so many great works of art, it could be a museum.

If you're staying near the Tiber in Trastevere, Monday morning would be an ideal day to do the Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Trevi fountain walk.

I see you don't have any sightseeing lined up in Trastevere. I really recommend both the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere (wonderful golden mosaics in the nave and on the front), and the Villa Farnesina (Renaissance Villa with beautiful frescoes and garden). The church of Santa Cecilia is also very nice.

A couple of other last minute questions. I haven't seen much written about either of these, but we find them intriguing ...

If we want to see the Mouth of Truth (Bocca della Verita), can you help me identify how that might best fit in our itinerary in terms of location?

Same question for the Pyramid of Cestius?

Here's our current itinerary:

Arrive late evening prior to Day 1

Day 1

Palatine Hill, Forum, Colosseum

San Giovanni, Holy Stairs

110 Open Bus Tour

shopping/wandering

possible Night Tour across Rome (Rick Steve's) - Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain

Day 2

Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica (tour with Angel Tours)

Borghese Gardens & Pincian overlook

Piazza di Spagna, Spanish Steps

Shopping/wandering

Via Condotti & Via del Corso

Day 3

considering a day trip to Capri or other island city

Day 4

additional shopping/wandering

Campo de' Fiori

Train to Florence

Grazie!

If you are in Rome on a Sunday, you might want to check to see if the Pope is in residence. If he is, he will usually make an appearance on his balcony facing the piazza at noon time. He does a general blessing at this time...be a shame to be there and not attend.

Romaturismo, the tourism branch of the Comune di Roma, has recommendations for 48 and 96 hours in Rome:

romaturismo.it/v2/…romain4896ore.html

The Mouth of Truth is in the portico of the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, near the Roman forum, close to the Tiber. So I guess you'd include it in that part of your itinerary.

Not sure what nights you are in town, but during the summer the 110 bus is running tours (NOT hop on/hop off) on Thurs/Fri/Sat nights, might be a nice, relaxing cheapish way to see the city at night, let me know if you need more info.

This google map of Romw shows a lot of the main tourist sites and some that I was intgerested in. You will probably have to zoom in and out to see what you need to.

Santa Maria Cosmedin is blue circle maker with the questin mark inside.

San Giovannni Laterno is the green star and arrow marker.
