 picnic in roman parks

i was wondering around the most incredible pubblic park i've ever seen in a city, villa pamphili in rome. roman parks are so so incredibly beautiful and they have so many of them. anyhow as i was wonderding around these 186 hectars of parks i saw so many people picnicking with their familys and in the park we found a beatiful caffee bistrot. beautifully decorated and prepares wonderful picnic boxes. i think it was called vivi bistrot.

take a walk in this park its truly so beautiful and get out of the caos of the city.

I've had a few wonderful picnics in the Villa Borghese or out on the via Appia Antica on sunny Sunday afternoons in Rome. I've never been to Villa Pamphili but I found a few nice pictures here: lifeinitaly.com/photos/gallery/default.asp…

I think this is a great suggestion, and putting together a picnic in Rome is easy and fun!

Thank you both, Appia Antica is allready on the top of my list. Planning to do a lot of picnics next time in rome. Is there a designated spot for picnics on Palatine hill? Or what would be a perfect spot on the Palatine to have a picnic? Does anyone know of a map of the Palatine with walkways marked out?

I don't know if there is a designated spot or not on the Palatine. I know that some of the archeological sights don't allow picnicking, probably because of trash problems. There was a picnic area at Ostia Antica and at the Aqueduct Park that had tables and trash cans.

On Via Appia Antica, we just found a pleasant spot to stop along the way. We brought along some panino/tramezzino, olives, fruit juice and the like. It can't be beat on a pleasant day.

If anybody finds a soccer ball at Villa Pamphili it must be one of the 5 that my son left there. Or one of the three beach towels that ended the same way...LOL

if you have children, there is a part where they can have fun. A skating rink, ponies and so on. The entrance is not far from the Fontanone on the Gianicolo Hill.

Happy you got there dewi

Yes I thought that some sites would not be to happy about picnicing, personally I don't litter but could offcourse accidently spill something. There is a lot of suggestions on the internet that says that a picknic on the Palatine is nice but the area seems large and as I have a bad foot I wouldn't like to run around in circles. I suppose one could ask at the gate, but I like to have a litlle advance knowledge.

I wonder if there is a sign that says what is allowed??

In any case, I agree with you... pack out that trash!

Although it's nice to sit and eat at a restaurant, we've had many a lunch while sight seeing, sitting on a bench or in a shady spot. The point of Tiberina Island (facing the free standing span of the Republican era bridge) has a nice tree to sit under and the rush of the river to serenade.

We pic nic in parks, of course you pick up the trash. That's only normal even for our standards.

My son and friends as children sometimes even had birthday parties at Villa Pamphili
