 Vatican Restaurant Recommendations

We are staying very close to the walls of the Vatican (north end, nr the metro line) and plan on eating in this area most nights (Feb for 3 nights).l Can someone please recommend where we can try some great Italian food? I have heard that this are isn't too great as the restaurants don't rely on repeat custom so I want to do my homework here...

Any help appreciated... P.S. The Sat night is a special occassion, my Fathers 60th birthday so we want somewhere really nice to go this evening.

Thanks a lot.

For your special occasion, you might consider this restaurant that has been around forever and has a Roman as well as a tourist clientele:

The immediate area to the Vatican has tourist catered bars & eateries, but a few blocks away is more for the residential area. Is there a preference of the type of food, seafood, meats etc?

With regards to the food, we would like a varied menu as we have one vegetarian in the group (of 6 people) and 4 who love meat and one who loves seafood- I know that is a bit of a mixture! We fancy something really traditional, it doesn't have to be fancy, just good food, good wine and in a nice location / venue...

Thanks for your help so far!

For an excellent menu that features a good range of meat & seafood dishes, limited for the vegetarian however there are some nice dishes is Grotta Azzurra corner of Via Cicerone & Via Valadier.

Here is there website

or an alternate is Pizzeria San Marco, corner of Via Tacito & Via Plinio, they serve not just pizzas, meat dishes and lovely variety of salads and starters, good prices as well. It is full just about every night!

Hope these help...from where I think you will be staying these are a fifteen minute walk...are you going to be closer to Cipro or Ottaviano stops?

I had a great lunch at Perilli in Prati when I visited the Vatican. It is at Via Otranto 9, a block north and a block west of the Ottaviano metro stop. They have a wonderful lunch buffet - terrific grilled meats, vegetables, and pasta. Don't recall the price - but no more than 10euros. Think the buffet is only at lunch, so not sure how ordering off the menu is. Not many tourists there, it seemed.

A wonderful restaurant, family owned and operated, close to the Vatican is Piacere Molise on Via Candia. They have the most amazing ravioli with a lemon sauce. I found this restaurant through another recommendation on this site. It isn't fancy but the food is great and the owners are terrific.

Thanks to everyone for your great ideas, we may try a few of these during our stay, will report back and let you know how it goes...

I think we are nearest the Ottaviano stop, although the map is hard to work out for the apt!

Getting very excited now!

Happy to help...if it is near Ottaviano stop it will be about a ten minute walk to the ones I sent through. Goodluck.
