Hotel in Salerno Near Ferry to Messina?

Can anyone recommend a hotel near the ferries to Messina? We will be taking a ferry or a train from Positano to get to Salerno and will be depending on public transportation. We don't need anything too fancy but clean and safe.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Positano doesn’t have a train station, so depending on your time of travel, you will be taking a ferry or a bus to Salerno.

However, the port for the Caronte ferry to Messina isn’t very convenient.

Where are the ferry terminals?

In Salerno: Molo 3 Gennaio (motorway A30 at the Sa/RC fork. Direction: Salerno. Exit at “Salerno centro, Costiera Amalfitana”. Follow the signs to the "Porto Commerciale".

Thank you for your help, Vagabonda. You are right, I should have said a ferry or a bus from Positano. Your posts have opened up another possibility. We may just fly from Napoli to Catania and save time. Whether we leave from Salerno or from Napoli, we will get there the afternoon prior so we have plenty of time to catch a ferry or plane the next day.

Grazie mille!

Or else there's the IC train from Salerno at 10:30 which gets to Messina at 15:30 - tickets in 2nd cost just €36.50...

Generally avoid trains in Southern Italy and especially in Sicily – Where will you be heading in Sicily?

Flying is your better option, especially if Messina isn’t your final destination.

Train service in Sicily is substandard – Trains are always late. The trains are old or broken leftovers from Northern Italy. Service is slow, usually hours longer for the same journey than travel by bus. Trains are dirty. The air-conditioning is often broken. The tracks are old and not maintained, and some are still single rail tracks. There’s no food service. Many Sicilian towns don’t have train stations. Even if you loved trains, the romance with trains would quickly fade in Sicily. The reality here makes you lose the rose tinted specs.
