You didn't say what your budget is, but here are two hotels where we've stayed several times. They're in Praiano, a small town just past Positano toward Amalfi. Fabulous views, great hotels, several good restaurants, and no crowds. Also, less expensive than Positano. If you want to visit Positano a small bus runs about every 60-90 minutes between the two towns.

Hotel Margherita-http://www.hotelmargherita.info/

Great 3 star hotel with a good restaurant. Higher up on the cliff with expansive views over the sea. Tremendous service and very friendly. They'll even drive you down to the beach and come and get you if you don't want to walk. We've stayed here in 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2013. Has pool and a separate large deck up on top.

Hotel Onda Verde-http://www.ondaverde.it/hoteli.htm

We stayed here in 2001, 2003, and 2005. Very nice place, down lower & closer to the water. Has a good restaurant and no pool. More expensive.

it really would be helpful if we knew your budget, per night in euros. There are several places in Positano to recommend (which means lots of restaurant selection and great transportation options) but it depends on how much you want to spend. And it would be 2 rooms?

So take a look at www.pensionemarialuisa.com - the views are gorgeous and you can get a room with a private balcony for 90 euro. It has received very good reviews on several travel boards and I would stay there in a heartbeat if I didn't rent an apartment. There are many great restaurants in Positano and it is easy to get to Amalfi via ferry, where you can also visit Ravello. There are also several beaches accessible from Pos, if relaxing by the sea is of interest.

We need to go from Ischia to Amalfi Coast beginning of September. I gather it would be best to take a boat from Ischia to Sorrento but where to stay? Is Sorrento the most convenient as a base for touring the area? The best hotels seem more expensive than anywhere else in Italy. Any recommendations for four star hotels that are in convenient location to get around for sightseeing? Around 200-300 Euros per night? We won't have a car so will have to rely on a hotel shuttle bus and taxis to get around to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Ravello, Positano, and Amalfi. We don't want to take large bus tours for sightseeing, any suggestions on small groups or special rates with drivers?

Hello Newyork. We are there in 2wks at the hotel luna convento in Amalfi for 1 wk and then over to Sorrento for 9 nights at the grand hotel de la ville..Both of these hotels offer small excursions .Check with your hotel when you are there. Both of these hotels are walking distance to the action and close to buses and trains.
