Rome to Amalfi coast

We will be traveling to Italy next September and are trying to squeeze in a trip to the Amalfi Coast. We fly into Rome with two other couples. We have already been to Rome but the others have not. While they are touring Rome, we'd like to take a quick trip south to Amalfi... maybe just one night. Is this possible or is there just too much to see to do it this way? Any suggestions?

Rome to Naples on the high-speed train starts at 19 Euros (10 Euros for children up to the age of 15 years, 0 days) OR 9 Euros on the slower Intercity train or Frecciabianca train.

900 Euros for a full day, round-trip private transfer is exorbitant, but not out-of-line, considering that the one-way fare is around 400 Euros.

But I'd still opt for the 19-Euro or 9-Euro train ride (in each direction).
