Atrani (Amalfi Coast) to Palermo.. train that boards a ferry

Hello!

My husband and I are going to be traveling from Atrani (Amalfi Coast) to Palermo and we are wondering what is the best/shortest mode of transportation? I have a friend that gave me this awesome tip but am not able to find out more information of exactly how to schedule this and through what service.

Here is what he said... "there is 100% a train that goes from Naples/Amalfi Coast area straight to Sicily, I was confused whether we got off the train and onto a boat to cross over at Villa San Giovanni but the train actually pulls onto this massive cruise ship and you just stay on the train, the ship then sails 30 min and lands in Messina but all the while you stay on the train and dont have to worry about getting a separate ferry to Sicily."

Any and all help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

the regular train (trenitalia.com) goes on a ferry across to Sicily. you would need to take the bus to Salerno to catch the train. there are several direct trains.

Alitalia flies direct from Naples to Palermo – Book on the Italian website for the lowest “Promo” fares.

Save Money By Booking Alitalia Flights “Like a Local”:

You might also save the cost of a hotel by taking the daily Tirrenia or SNAV overnight ferries from Naples to Palermo.

Although Caronte runs a ferry from Salerno to Messina, the schedule isn’t convenient via public transport.

The train is your least attractive option – There’s no food service, often very hot, dirty....

Holy smokes, these tips are great! Thank you! Totally booked a flight on Alitalia "Like a Local" and saved almost $200, absolutely amazing.

Another question while I have your expertise... what is the best way to get to Atrani from Naples and vise versa? We need to make sure we give ourselves enough time for the commute and if anyone can advise about how long that will take, that would be a HUGE help.

Thanks much!

If you want the "best" way - it is also the most expensive way - book a car service to take you from Naples to Atrani but the cost will likely be around 120 plus euros.

The ride in a car will take about 2.25 hours from Naples. With public transportation, it will depend on whether you make all the connections - it may well take longer than the 2.25 hours. It would involve a local train to Sorrento from Naples then a SITA bus to Amalfi from which you would then board another bus to Atrani.

If you are arriving in Naples via train from somewhere else, you may want to take the train instead to Salerno from which you can catch the SITA bus to Atrani - approximately 65-70 minutes. If coming in high season, there are ferries that run from Salerno which you could take to Amalfi and then bus to Atrani which is just a few minutes from Amalfi.

Good job Angela L! :-)

It would take about 1,5 hours to drive from Naples to Atrani via the A3.

And the fastest public transport is the SITA bus from Naples to Atrani, 01h55.

If arriving from the airport, you might take the Alibus from the airport to Naples and then continue onward as indicated above, or you might take the SITA bus service from the airport to Salerno and then continue onward from Salerno by bus or ferry to Amalfoi (town).
