back from 2 weeks Italy yesterday |
|
Just came back from 2 weeks in Italy and want to thank everyone who helped me w my trip and would like to do the same for others so here is my post and if anyone has any direct questions you can email me at vilen49@yahoo.com A. Amalfi coast: stayed in great hotel in Positano, Covo Dei Saraceni. Directly on beach, marvelous views, great staff. Hotel resturant very good first night, not as good the second time we ate there. Went to Ravello, Amalfi and Capri. Ravello beautiful, up on a hill ovelooking sea. If you can have lunch at Palasso Sasso. Amazing views. Had dinner at Maxs, Mediterano, and Don Alfonso 1890. Dinner at Don Alfonso is a eating delight. The resturant rivals anything here in NYC. Food was eloquently served and the staff excellent. They have an amazing wine cellar which you must see. Maxs was very good in a setting of a art gallery. They also have cooking classes there. I would skip Mediterano, although it was clearly a local place, not many tourists, but the food was fair at best. B. Florence: stayed at Hotel Benivieni. Small hotel near the Duomo. Smallish rooms but clean with newly renovated bathrooms. Run by family who were helpful. Good location, near Dumo and Ponte Vecchio. Eat at 3 resturants: 1. 13 Goobi; food good but they did not honor our reservation which was annoying. 2. La Giostra; cant say enough about it. The chef comes out and explains everything and gives you a plate filled with different appetizers. The chefs son, who wears about 250 bracelets, is a character who also explains the dinners. It was my daughter's 21st birthday that night and without me asking for it, they brought her a cake at the end of the dinner and sung happy birthday. The food was excellent, the best night for sure in my two weeks in Rome. 3. Trattoria Graga; noting special at all and was expensive. C. Rome. stayed in a great new hotel the Rose Garden Palace. Beautiful rooms and bathrooms, gorgeous lobby and eating and bar area. Very good location across the street from American Embassy I got around Italy by using drivers. While expensive I did not want to use public transportation because of events in London. I hired a driver to take me from Rome to Positano, Jack the Driver who I ended up using for 5 days in Positano and who eventually took me to Florence. He was so nice and so knowlegable that he served as our driver and guide. He also was considerably cheaper tnan the drivers the hotel was going to get for us. We spent a lot of time with him and we have invited him to come stay w us whenever he comes to the US. If anyone wants his number you can e mail me at vilen49@yahoo.com. Just by way of example the hotel informed me that they would get me a driver to take me from Rome to Positano for 600 euros. Jack the Driver was 350. The hotel in Florence told me that they would get me a driver from Positano to Florence for 1100 euros. Jack was 700 I am happy to answer any questions I can about my trip which was for 2 weeks for my 25th wedding anniversity and my daughters 21st birthday ( my 17 year old son also came) you can email me at vilen49@yahoo.com Report as inappropriate |

Happy Anniversary! My husband and I will be celebrating our 25th in Italy as well. I have La Giostra on my list of places to go now. Any other tips & advice would be greatly appreciated as we will have only 6 days to visit Rome, Florence & Venice. Since we have funded our 4 childrens various trips to Europe, we will be leaving them at home, of course that means bringing back gifts! Any suggestions on where to go for something a little different. Your kids might be able to help too as my daughters are 23, 18, 16 and my son is 20. Thank you so very much for any and all help! happy to hear you had a great time. I am going with my dad for thanksgiving. I am 38 years old and I am the one planning this. we have only 8 days to spend there. Rome, Florence and Positano (capri?) (and Pompeii). Can I do this all in that amount of time and if so can you offer any suggestions. I am just getting started on reading everything, so I am still a bit ignorant. We are going to rent a car. I will take your advise on Jack. We will fly into Rome, how far is Florence by car?? Then back to Rome, and then south?? Help! Thanks Tabeach1@aol.com Tara Report as inappropriate

Sherif: I was not enamored with Capri. I did not get to AnaCapri, which is on Capri and which is supposed to be nicer. I thought the port was cheap looking with lots of tourist cheap items. Once in the main section of Capri which we took a taxi to, it was nothing but a bunch of expensive shops. We ate lunch there and for 2 salads and a pizza it was 50 euros; they had a cover and service charge. I dont know but it did not seem to be the fantasyland that I had heard about. Tabeach1: I do not think it wise to try and do as much as you seem to want to do in 8 days. If you are flying in to Rome, Florence is 2 1/2 away if traffic is light. From Florence, which is north of Rome to Positano, Capri, etc which is south of Rome is 5 hours. We fly into Rome and them went South to Positano. We stopped at Herculean instead of Pompei, but they are close to each other. Pompei is bigger but not as well excavated as Herculean. If you have limited time which you do then go to Herculean. It is smaller and managable in 1 1/2 hours. To do as much as you want to do in your post in that short of a period you will be spending lots of time travelling. You might want to consider taking away one of the places. Florence is a wonderful city that requires 3 days. Same for Rome. Capri I was not enamored with so I would by pass it as it is about 40 minutes by hydrofoil off the coast and longer if you go by regular ferry. If you want to go to Amalfi coast and dont have a lot of time left b/c of your time in Florence and Rome go to Sorrento which is still the Amalfi coast but not as far south as Positano. Good luck Report as inappropriate
