Restaurant

Hi - I am looking for a restaurant for 8 people eating spanish food.

Not too far from Plaza del Carman.

Authentic food at a reasonably cheap price but not touristy

Thank you

Puerto Rico on Calle Chinchilla 2 (between Plaza del Carmen and Gran Vía) is a good dive restaurant for groups. No touristy.

Twelve minutes away:

Botin

Calle Cuchilleros 17-19

28005 Madrid

Tel. 913 664 217

Website: http://http://www.botin.es/

Cost of average meal - 35 euros.

Comments: Oldest restaurant in the world, since 1725. Good Castilian food. Roast suckling pig is the specialty. There are many other traditional dishes such as lamb. Moderate prices. If you are there at 1 pm for lunch, you do not need a reservation. Many visiting statesmen and celebrities are brought to this restaurant.

I have dined at Botin during previous trips to Madrid. It is a tourist haunt and I felt rushed on both occasions. Bit like a conveyor belt trying to pack in as many people as possible. The food is good but if you want a long leisurely lunch or dinner surrounded by locals then look elsewhere.

If you can handle a Spanish (no English) menu, then go to La Puebla on Ventura de la Vega. It's not near but not far from Plaza de Carmen. According to Google maps it's about a 10 minute walk and a little over a kilometer.

Definitely not touristy since there is no menu in English, but I am sure they can accommodate with advance planning 8 people. See "contacts" on their website. One of the dishes photographed is "cocido" a favorite for many, especially in the cold weather...multi-meat stew with brother served as first course, vegetables, second and meats, last...well, prior to dessert.

Menu del dia around 10-12 euros includes two courses, a dessert, bread (no butter), wine, soda, beer (coffee not included)

This is their own site.
