telefonica is Spain's popular phone service carrier. www.telefonica.es

I think they do rentals... if not, get a "pay as you go" package and return it at the end of the trip?

Who is your service provider in NJ? If you have T-Mobile service, then your calls will go right through once you've set up the international roaming feature, which is free. The cost of the calls are $0.99/min. incoming and outgoing. If you're only going to gone for nine days, don't have the T-Mobile service and need a contact number before you leave, then you can contact "On Spanish Time" who can rent you a phone and you'll have your phone number before you leave for Spain.

If you don't want to do that and have an unlocked GSM tri-mode or dual-mode phone, then you just need to pick up a pre-paid sim card which can be purchased ahead of time at one of several companies on-line, including "On Spanish Time", or you can wait until you arrive in Spain and pick one up then. You will then have to notify those at home what your contact phone number is before they can reach you.
