Catalonian independence day sept 11th 2004 |
|
my self and my wife are off to barcelona this weekend (9th - 14th sept), reading a tourist book i read that september 11th (part from being one of the worst dates in history) is Catalonian independence day. has anyone actually been in barcelona when this demonstration / festival is on? is it more of a festival or is it a full blown demonstration with riots etc? are there any areas in the city to avoid / or to go to when this is on? any other good barcelona tips appreciated. cheers. Basically what "La Diada" will mean to you is that, as it is a bank holiday most shops will be shut (except souvenir shops and corner shops) and museums will close at lunchttime (2.30-3pm). It's Catalan national day but celebrates the defeat of the Catalans by the Bourbons in 1714, which led to Catalonias loss of independent identity within Spain. So no big celebrations, just an official party laying a wreath at the site of martyrdom. (which is quite near Picasso museum). The first Diada after Franco's death,in 1976, was the time when there were massive demonstrations revindicating Catalan rights but except for occasional incidents with (Catalan)Republican supporters all is quiet these days. This year the mood will probably be more sombre because it is the half-year anniversary of the Madrid bombings. As to what to see in Barcelona....the "bus turistic" has two routes and gives you a good overview of the city with chance to hop on and off at sights. One-day ticket 16 and for 2-day ticket (consecutive) 20 which is a better deal and means you can take things a bit more calmly. Our family favourite place to take visitors is Parc Gell. Various Gaud houses are visitable and fabulous. We also like (without visitors too!) the Ramblas, Plaa del p, the harbour and Maremagnum . Time Out is prob. the best guidebook with lots to read. Lots of conciser ones available in Britain. If you want a day-trip out of the city, go to Sitges or Montserrat. Finally...watch out for distractions which may be caused by pickpockets. Have a good trip! Report as inappropriate | ||||||
