Hired a car from this firm at Palma airport, as I had been tempted by the full/full fuel policy and the ease of car collection avoiding the long queues at the ususal car hire desks.
When collecting the car, I was offered the opportunity of paying for additional insurance to cover all damage done during my stay, or pay a €650 deposit. I chose the latter, as all I would be using the car for would be to get from the airport to a relatives house in Palma, and for some short trips from there to the local out of town shops e.g. Decathlon, supermarkets etc. and would not be taking it down any of the rough country roads.
I was handed the keys, and was told that the car was in its parking space and that no pre-inspection was necessary. I got to the car, gave it an inspection and noted that there were no damaging marks other than I couple of tiny minor paint chips (the usual sort caused by wear and tear from dring along country tracks. On reflection, perhaps I should have gone back and pointed these out, but given that they were so small and caused by usual wear, I did not think it necessary.
When returning the car, I was met by a representative who inspected the car and immediately pointed out these tiny marks and accused me of having caused damage to the car for which I was liable for. I was also accused of not having insisted on having a pre-inspection undertaken when I picked up the car, and that it was my responsibility to ask for this - this is must be nonsense as it surely it is the responsibility of the car hire firm to offer this to the client before the client takes possession?!.
To cut a long story short I ended up paying €300 for these tiny pre-existing marks. Refusing to do so and having stayed to argue would have caused my to miss my flight. However, on the form I was asked to sign on returning the car I made it very clear in writing that I was disputing the, which was only being made at the risk of missing my flight, that the "damage" was pre-existing and that I disputed that it was the responsibility of the client to ensure that an inspection of the car was undertken by the car hire firm before it is taken away.
The payment is now being disputed by my credit card company. Furthermore, it is not the first issue of this nature that they have had to deal with!
So for anybody thinking of using this firm, be careful their staff clearly mislead clients, and I would go as far to say as they are liars and crooked!!
