AVE Madrid to Seville

I have tried to book some tickets for the AVE - Madrid to Seville on both a private site and on the RENFE site without success - their computer systems would not let us do it. We are looking to travel in late March. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this work?

The Renfe site does not allow bookings more than 62 days ahead.

VicVisitor,

Renfe has been irregular about publishing train departures these last few months. There's also been some news about lower prices for 2013. Normally, bookings are done up to 62 days in advance, as mentioned by sydneynick. Today, tickets for the the Madrid-Sevile train are only being offered up to Feb 2 (less than 1 month in advance). Check back next month or periodically do a hypothetical search on Renfe to figure out how far along bookings are going.

From the main page, click on the Shopping Basket to get to the 'venta' page, here:

https://venta.renfe.com/vol/inicioCompra.do

Input your Origin/Destination, choose a date.

If the search yields no trains or it says "Trains Blocked", click on 'Day Before' to go backwards until you get to a date with train departures listed.

Make sure to read the Top Question on Renfe if you plan to use the Renfe website to get the Web discounted tickets. If you don't mind paying add'l service charges, buy your tickets on RailEurope or Petrabax.

Just took the Madrid to Barcelona train a few days ago. No trouble at all getting tickets at the Atocha station an hour before departure time. Marvelous way to travel - quiet, fast, comfortable. Just watch out for the ticket agent with the bad toupe. Real grump....

If you buy at the station for that day you will pay the full fare, there are substantial discounts on Web fares and Estrella fares. Web fares are non transferable and non changeable, Estrella fares allow changes as long as its more than 7 days before departure (15% fee), after that if you want to change you have to pay the difference between your Estrella fare and the current price (i.e. full fare).

Web fares only available online, Estrella fares available online, at stations and at agents up to 7 days before departure date.

Availability of Web fares is extremely limited on some routes so you need to get in early, and Estrella fares are limited on many trains also.

If you buy at the station for that day, you will pay the full fare UNLESS you are 60+ yo and using a Tarjeta Dorada (Gold Card). That will give you 25-40% discount on AVE trains (other discount levels on other trains).

Of course if you want the flexibility of walk-up ticket purchase for the AVE and many other longer distance journeys then the Spain Pass is well worth looking at too if the Tarjeta Dorada is not an option.

Does this route (Madrid-Seville) tend to sell out? I am flying to Madrid and purchased a Spain rail pass, which still requires reservations. Because of the possibility of delays in flights/baggage/customs, it'd be better to make the reservation upon arrival, but only if I could count on there being seats available.
