I posted this question in the Lisbon forum first, and someone suggested I should also ask for advice in the Spain forum. I'm relatively new to tripadvisor so my apologies if this isn't the right place to post!
My husband and I are planning to visit Portugal and southern Spain in early June. Nothing is booked yet, but our tentative plan is to fly into Lisbon and stay there for a few days (including a visit to Sintra), rent a car and make our way down to Lagos for another 2-3 days, then on to Granada for 2 days, then Seville for 2 days, and finally back to Lisbon for our last night before we fly back out.
I do realize that you could spend two weeks in either country and still not have time to see most of the highlights, but due to cost and other factors this may be our last international trip for a few years. We initially planned to visit only Portugal but it seems silly to us to fly all that way and not at least drive through part of Spain. :)
I would love to hear opinions on whether this itinerary is reasonable, or if it's too much crammed into that time frame, or if we should drop one of those cities in favor of another.
If it makes any difference, we enjoy visiting historical sites (ruins, palaces, cathedrals, etc.), scenic views (cliffs, beaches, hillside, etc... basically all of the things that don't exist here in Dallas, Texas!), and exploring pretty towns on foot (with a stop or two in a nice cafe, of course). Some people might consider this blasphemy, but we are not huge into visiting museums, and would rather spend the time outdoors drinking in the sights and views, unless it is an absolute "must-see" museum. We're hoping to find a balance between seeing as many highlights as we can, but also taking the time to enjoy ourselves and relax.
I would also like to get people's thoughts on renting a car to make our way from city to city vs. taking a bus or train. We had some unpleasant experiences with public transportation in Italy a few months ago, and are leaning towards renting a car so we'd have more flexibility with our plans/timing.
Any feedback or suggestions are appreciated!
