Dolphin-watching trips without going on to Gibraltar?

We've decided not to venture on to Gib but really wanted to take a trip out to watch the dolphins. We are staying in the Mijas area and wanted to know if there's anywhere along the coast that you can take a boat trip to see the dolphins or even the odd whale from the Spanish side (though thinking would that involve boats crossing territorial boarders?!)

Have googled and found this company in Fuengirola marina

http://www.dolphinboattrips.com/

and a company further up the coast towards Marbella:

You could also do the ferry ride from Fuengirola to Benalmadena or Benalmadena to Malaga and although not guaranteed (also not guaranteed on the other boats) you may well see dolphins and flying fish.

Many thanks Ceejayblue - I love boat trips in any way shape or form so the alternative ferry suggestion is a good one when the 'official' ones are so expensive! And I know only too well that you can spend a bomb for that one-off experience in some far flung part of the world, only to see absolutely nothing (thank you for nothing manta rays off on their own jollies the day I went in Oz!)

Try posting a similar question in the Algeciras forum, there may be dolphin trips from the Spanish mainland rather than Gib. Algeciras is across the bay fom Gib.

Perhaps the dolphins will have taken note of current tensions in the area and swum off somewhere less problematic.

My son and his friend went on the catamaran that leaves from Puerto Banus and also Marbella. You do need to book in advance but the lady in the office speaks fabulous English and they simply take your name and where you will be joining the boat etc.

The boys had a great time (early 20's age group) and only criticism was that as the Banus pick up is after Marbella, the best places to lounge were already taken.

No gurantees of dolphins but a lot easier than going to Gib right now.

Thank you for comments and suggestions. Have feelers out on the Algeciras forum too as suggested but no takers yet. All packed and off to bed for an early flight tomorrow ... can't wait!
