It is possible, but first you will have to get to Alicante either by bus or tram.

Alicante to Madrid 3hrs 15 mins (approx), then Madrid to Malaga 2 hrs 45 mins.

So about 6 hours train travel plus change waiting time plus travel to Alicante.

There is a direct coach between Alicante and Málaga, journey time around 6 hours.

Fine if you don't mind sleeping on coaches, if you're like me then that's at least the fourth Circle of Hell.

If I may piggyback on this post, any ideas how frequent train service would be between Madrid and Malaga in May? I can only find schedules on line through February. Just want to be sure it is feasible to take a train when we arrive - we're coming in to MAD airport and know we have to take a commuter train between MAD and the main train station , but just want to be sure the trains are frequent enough and that we could buy tickets as walk up passengers with no problems- that way a late plane arrival would not be a complication. We want to do this in both directions if posible as the flights Malaga- Madrid seem to be inconvenient for our Madrid- Miami connection and we would get to see some countryside via train, which we would much prefer.

The schedules only go up to 62 days in advance, but the February ones will give you a general idea (there may be a few more trains in May, especially 8th - 16th as it's the Córdoba Patios Festival, well worth seeing).

Most people travelling between Madrid and Málaga take the train since the fast line opened, if you know your dates get in online as soon as they become available to get the best advance discounts.
