I think that you will be hard pressed to find one. It isn't the payment for the hire which is the problem, but that the hire company will need to take a card swipe with a deferred payment to ensure that in the event of a total loss they will be able to recover the insurance excess. Credit offers a guarantee which debit cards do not. It is essential that if you are adamant that you will not have a credit card then you negotiate with companies before you leave. The majority will allow you to pay for the car hire online witha debit card, but may then refuse to allow you to collect the car when you are unable to produce a Visa or Mastercard at the rental desk - I have known this to happen. It isn't the issue of you getting into debt which they have to take into account but the possibility that you may pay €100 for a rental then steal or write off a €15000 car!

You may however find one which will allow you to pay the excess in advance of the rental by debit card rather than as a deferred payment at the time of collection, but be warned that the deposit may be anywhere between €300 and €600. One or two companies used to take Visa debit, but I understand that this has pretty much stopped now.

There are several cards available where you can only spend the amount of money which you have first deposited to the company - not a credit card as such, but recognised as a Visa or Mastercard.If you can't find another solution would this be a viable option and perhaps deposit £600 or so on it just for this purpose?

having a credit card does not put you into debt, all you have to do is get a 0% for 3-6 months on purchases card, use this to hire your car and when you get home pay the balance in full then rip up the card and all you will pay is the same as you would have on your debit card.
