Average Monthly Salary in Spain |
|
I am a retired engineer and have lived in Malaga the last 3 years. When I worked in California for a multinational company, my job was in statistics. So when I read the newspaper and read something about statistics, it catches my attention, because I have to admit that everything here is new to me still. I know that this is a travel site, but I think that the more sophisticated traveler wants to know something more about Spain than where to go and what to eat and what nightclub is hot. That is why I like to publish items of interest to me, to share something that the traveler may not know, something that I did not know. So here goes: The newspaper ADN, in the economy section, states that the average monthly salary in Spain is 1686 euros. However you have to know that in Spain they pay you for 14 months, and not 12. There is one extra payment in June or July, to help you with your vacation. There is another extra payment in December, for your Christmas expenses. Why did we not have this in the USA? So, doing my calculations, the REAL average monthly salary comes out to be 1967 euros. I multiplied 1686 by 14 and divided the result by 12. Interesting, isn't it? For those of you who live in England, Ireland, and the US, I would be interested to know your statistics. Also other countries, because I do not want to leave out anyone. Translate your figures into euros, so that we can all compare! |

Hi Benny Interesting post as usual. Although I am intrigued to know where you got the "14 month pay" from. I have never heard of this and was wondering how common it is in Spain. Is it a full month payment or a "bonus" payment that is less than the monthly pay?

Busy at work getting ready to leave for Malaga. Here is the site for the Median income in the US. It is based on each state and varies. I don't have time just now to do the calculations. Based on the exchange rate, I think for most Americans, the average income is less than in Spain. For instance in Seattle the Median income for a family of four is around $75000.00 US but in Spokane the median income for a family of 4 is about $46,000.00 US. The median income is higher is Western Washington due to Microsoft and the software industry and the Boeing Company. I am an attorney that practices bankruptcy law. We are seeing a surge in bankruptcies due to the suprime mortgage issue. The Seattle area isn't as hard hit as the rest of the country but there is a decline in the real estate market here. Here is the site: www.census.org

Everyone who works in Spain gets 14 months pay. It is not just a bonus, but is really pay. The two months extra pay helps families pay for summer vacation and Christmas presents. I do not know how this social legislation came about. Those who receive pensions from the Social Security system also get the two extra payments.
