Hi, I am an Irish girl moving to Leipzig to work in August. I have been researching the city on the net and it seems like a lovely cultural city. I am wondering about the cost of living in the city- what is the typical monthly rent for an apartment?, how does it compare to other German cities?. I would appreciate any advice.

The rents are low in Leipzig although I have heard they rose a ,ot in the last time. 3-4 years ago it was possible to get a nice central 3-room apartment for under 400 Euro. It is probably one of the cheapest big cities in Germany. The reason of course being around 20% unemployment in the area.

In the cities like Munich or Frankfurt where there is more companies and less unemployed the rents may be at least twice as high.

Hi there, Leipzig is quite expensive compared to other German cities at the same level. You can't really compare it with Munich or Frankfurt as they are fairly bis cities with a lot of big businesses i.e. many jobs. The rents for appartments in our house e.g. are about €5,5/m² including the actual costs for heating and overheads. This is still quite cheap so you can imagine anything up to €6.-/€7.- per m². The next thing is that we are currently suffer a rising rip off by the gas and electricity suppliers which affects the domestic domain and is currently a big issue on the news.

Left aside the costs, Leipzig is a lovely city. What makes it so extroardinary is the structure of the green belt that surrounds and intertwines the city which gives you plenty of possibilities for jogging, hiking, biking, rowing on rivers and canals. It consists of parks and forests. There are many cafés with different clientele such as artists, etc. as Leipzig is famous for music and art. There is an opera and a classical music hall (The famous Gewandhaus).

Leipzig has an interesting size, not too big so you can feel part of some kind of mutual feeling for the artistic scene and the nature and not too small to be denoted a "small town" in the real sense of the word. It is the only city in Germany that I know so far that has something about it to compare the atmosphere to London or a British city. But that is just a subtle personal idea, you might want to find out for yourself!

In this sense: Welcome and enjoy your stay in good old Leipzig!

Hi...I am an American woman who is also moving to Leipzig to work in August. Actually I am going in July to look for a place to live. I have the same questions that you have! I am also wondering if you are a teacher, by chance. I am going to teach there and the director who hired me mentioned an Irish woman he was also hiring! Are you by chance that person? I was hired at an international conference in London recently...please let me know...Thanks!

Hi there, i'm going over to Leipzig to teach also and was hired at a fair in London too so i reckon we'll be teaching at the same school. Could we maybe get each others email addresses from the school and mail one another?. Went over to Leipzig for a few days,it's a really lovely city, was very impressed!

Hi, this is mainly to Maidieladie and Amyjo, both of whom have said they're going to be teaching here in Leipzig around August 2006. It wouldn't be the Leipzig International School by any chance? I'm a British woman from London and have lived in Leipzig since August 2001 where 2 of my children attend. I'd be very interested to get to know you all and I could give you lots of Leipzig City info, as well as make some new English Native Speaking friends! I'm 42, live between Gohlis-Süd and Zentrum-Nord (near the Zoo). How's your German? They speak a strange dialect here known as Sachsich deutsch (kinda like the Glasgow of Germany).

If you like we can exchange email addresses, reply to this if you'd like to.

We will be visiting grandchildren in Wurzen outside Leipzig. We would appreciate any suggestions for things to do with them... ideas for fun adventures.

We would take the train or drive. In the past we usually visit the Saachsen Therme for swimming, and take them horseback riding. They are 7, 10 and 12, two older girls and youngest is a boy.

Thank you for your time.

Hi Oma and Opa!

you may like to visit the small Theme Park on outskirts of leipzig called 'Belantis', you can find all the information (also in English) on the Belantis Leipzig website. Have you visited Leipzig Zoo with them? We live 5 mins walk from it and its very nice, also with playgrounds and the children can feed the seals at 11am (ish). Leipzig has many parks and one can also visit the Wildpark (see website) or the Cospudenersee, though this is mainly FKK (nude) during Summertime, I guess it depends on you, but not really my cup of tea! Whatever you do, I hope you all have great fun here in Leipzig!

Hi there! It's Amy Jo again! I have been very, very busy! How amazing we found each other! Yes, Michael Webster must have hired us both the same day! I am from Arizona and this will be my first experience teaching outside the US!I have been teaching for 30 years and this is a hugely exciting adventure! Also, hello to the parent who wrote in! I will be teaching at Leipzig International School! I am a beginning German speaker. I do speak a bit of Frnech and Spanish, but I never imagined living in Germany and have never studied the language! Yes, Maidieladie, I will e-mail the lady in Human Resources who has been helping us and see if she will give us the e-mails to exchange!

Hi, Maidieladie and Amyjo! :) I'm a teacher in Australia and have just seen the ad for a position teaching at the Leipzig International School and was really interested, so jumped on here to see if I could find out more about the place, apart from what is on tourist sites, so it's superb that I found your messages! You might not even get on here again, already living in Leipzig now (your messages were posted early in the year!), but if you do, are you enjoying working at the school? What is it like? Cheers! LB from Oz! :)
