Must see's Mosel

Hello. In September we plan to drive through the Mosel Valley, perhaps spending about 4 days in this region before wending our way towards Prague. At this stage our last stop before the Mosel Valley is Metz in France. We would be interested to hear of any "must see's" in this area. Towns that are particularly nice to stay in etc. We are not budget travellers and enjoy a bit of luxury on our travel. Thank you.

There are too many to mention but Trier, Cochem, Bernkastel-Kues come to mind and the many small villages that lie between them are pretty nice.

Check for hotel availability before you go as that is

peak season.

Thank you for your recommendations. We were hoping to book just a day or so in advance as we go, would you not recommend that. I had thought the peak season ended at the end of August.

That is the time of year that many people choose to spend in the area due to the wine harvest and many wine related events. If the weather plays along it can't be beat. Many of the wine-fests and small town fairs

happen in and around the Mosel in September. As far as lodging, your luxury hotels will not be a problem but the smaller B&Bs and smaller hotels can sell out fast.

As you'll be in Metz already, consider going to Nancy as well, it's great!

Cochem is the largest and most 'touristy' town on the Mosel but nevertheless an excellent place to stay.It does get busy during the summer season. You should be OK in September though.

If you have time Koblenz is a great town and about 45 minutes from Cochem. It's where the Mosel meets the Rhine and is dominated by an excellent Napoleonic Castle. You can take a short boat trip down the Rhine from here.

Also very close to the Mosel is the Ahr Valley - again worth a visit ,particularly the walled town of Ahrweiler. This is a very beautiful small town surrounded by vineyards. The main road that runs through the Ahr valley has numerous vintners all of whom give the opportunity to sample the excellent red wine of the valley.

Thank you for the suggestions. Reading about Bernkastel-Kues I think this may be a good place to base outselves for 2 - 3 nights before heading off on the rest of our trip.

Be sure to visit the Roman sights in Trier and Burg Eltz if it's still open in September. Beilstein and Zell are quaint towns to stop in for a stroll or a meal.

Slightly off piste (about 30km off the river road), you could take your camper van around the Nurburg Ring!

However you would have to be insane to do this.

Thank you for your reply. We have heard of the "ring". We are travelling by car not campervan so driving the ring may be a fun thing to do.
