4-ish hours in Dusseldorf

We, also will have a longer-than-desired layover, and would love to escape the airport for about four hours in June. Please tell us both the easiest, and the least expensive way to get to an interesting part of town; somewhere to get a mid-day meal, see nice sights, perhaps do some shopping, and get back to the airport in time to get through security for our flight to the U.S. Thanks in advance, Celia

Thank you for the information. The four hour window takes into consideration the 90 minute pre-flight period.

Celia, use the train to the main station and then a tram to downtown, getting off at Heinrich Heine Allee. Walk down Koenigsallee and do your shopping, however it is like Fifth Avenue, very expensive and exclusive shops. Walk over to the Rhine and walk along the Rhine, perhaps have a coffee. For a German lunch or dinner stop at Zum Schiffchen. For a beer try Uerige. Both are in Altstadt and just off the Rhine Promenade.

Yes, would focus on a walk starting at south end of Koenigsallee up to the north of Koe. Take a look at the Schadow Arkaden, then follow to the Old town - take a sneak on Flinger and Bolker Street as well as the city hall + the rhine promenada. That should be fine to get an overview :-)
