I don't know. Both are smallish wine towns. Mainz would be more accommodating of your interests.

About "smallish":

The most visited sights in Germany in 2003 (couldn't find a more up-to-date list):

1. Cologne Cathedral: 6 million visitors

2. Rüdesheim Drosselgasse: 3 million visitors

3. Berlin Reichstag: 2,7 million visitors

Rüdesheim is more about wine taverns. But there are also some beer bars.

Pros: live music, density of taverns/bars

Cons: touristic

abalada is correct, there's nothing smallish about the number of tourists that visits Rüdesheim. That said, it's still a smallish town with a population of less than 10,000 and with a focus on wine - one that indeed gets quickly overrun by tourists because it is relatively small.
