one night in Garmisch - Parternkirchen area - where stay?

We have decided to rent a car and drive from Munich down to Fussen, Garmish-Partenkirchen area/Ommeramergau for one night. Have to catch a 3:30 flight next day to Venice. Wondering which city best to stay in? Why? My try to see a castle or two the first day and have a few hours in the morning. Family of five with 2 teenage girls (19/13) and one 9 year old boy.

Thanks in advance for suggestion as well as what we should do with the limited time there.

No castles in the Garmisch area. If castles are a must, best to stay in Fuessen/Schwangau. Unless you find can find an apartment, you'll most likely need two rooms, and the area down there isn't known for being cheap.

You could visit just the outside of Neuschwanstein Castle and visit the interior of Linderhof Palace.

Strictly seen Linderhof is in the area of Garmisch as both are in Upper Bavaria, while Füssen and Neuschwanstein are in the Allgäu.

If you are in Linderhof I would proceed to Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Mittenwald. Due the passion play this year in Oberammergau accommodation at/near Oberammergau will be difficult to find.

You could also return your car in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and travel by train to Venice. If you start in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 10:04 you're IN Venice (directly at Santa Lucia station on the island) at 17:40.

If you take the road from Fuessen that goes by am Plansee to Linderhof is about 14.5 miles and from Linderhof castle to Ettal monastery to Garmisch Partenkirchen is about 14 miles.

I have stayed at Landhaus Hohe Tannen but I would suggest a hotel closer to center for just one night. Gasthof Fraundorfer in Partenkirchen or if you want to take cable car to Zugspitze - Eibsee Hotel in Eibsee.

RE: Gasthaus Frauendorfer. Great location, but not ideal for a group as large as yours. But dinner there is a good suggestion.

If you don't end up staying at the Frauendorfer you simply MUST at least go there for dinner. Deep Bavaria, all good. Your kids will love it.

Another hotel option just down the street from Frauendorfer is the Old Post Hotel. It's been slammed recently by some TA posters, but I've stayed there probably 10 times and think it's great. Quite old world, though (as you would expect from the name -- it's the old Post Office in town) so expect accordingly.

Kim San Jose: Thanks much.

We are set to stay at the Frauendorfer in Garmisch as they have a family room there, seem very nice and we booked for around 200 euro all in for the night, which works......it will be quaint I am guessing, its for only one night and what the heck...thanks for the tip on the Post.....dinner at Frauendorfer is booked for 7:30 we are good to go and excited for that.

So, here is a question for you and others: we arrive in Garmisch from Munich (via rental car) say around 1pm. We only have that day and a few hours in the morning the next day to see the area, and that is IT for our Bavarian experience for the kids. Thought we would drive thru Fussen. Sandy 12 suggested we "take the road from Fuessen that goes by Plansee to Linderhof is about 14.5 miles and from Linderhof castle to Ettal monastery"..would we do that on the drive TO Garmisch from Munich or after we arrive? Kids are more about doing and seeing things (got to keep them active) so wondering if we should do the drive the next morning to Neuschwanstein (early) and see only the outside of that castle rather than do the whole interrior tour thing. I saw that interior once and have no memory of it but really have strong memory of the castle itself. Any thoughts on the drive from Munich to Garmisch hotel is appreciated (what to do what route) and then what to do that afternoon we arrive before dinner at the Frauendorfer and the next morning before we drive back to Munich to catch a flight to Venice, (3:30pm assume we need to leave Garmisch around 11:30 to turn in car at airport and catch this flight?) is appreciated...thanks

Are you renting car from Munich airport or in town?

Go to google and then get directions put in address of rental car and then address of Gasthaus Frauendorfer. You will have a better idea how long drive is. Then reverse direction And start out from hotel in ettal, linderhof, hohenschwangau, and then hotel again you will get idea how long trip takes. You can play with route see what route works best.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linderhof_Palace go to bottom for more links.

www.linderhof.de pick park and then plan/park bldg there is a map description of bldgs . Thee is lots to keep your kids occupied and grotto should be a hit.

If you just want to see only the outside of Neuschwanstein castle I would go after Linderhof castle.
