The two closest countries to Stuttgart are France and Switzerland and both are less than a 2 hour drive away.

There are lots of excellent things to see an do in and around Stuttgart ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de ) itself without having to leave the metropolitan area..

There is plenty to do/see in and around Stuttgart and the German Federal State of Baden-Württemberg.

Have also a look into older postings in the Stuttgart forum.

Between Baden-Württemberg and Italy there is Switzerland. And Poland is even further. Switzerland and the Alsace (France) are places abroad bordering Baden-Württemberg and which can be reached in 2-3 hours from Stuttgart.

For further places you'll have to fly

Leave Stuttgart it´s a boring city (you can tour it in 1/2 a day).

Take the train to Paris (it only takes 2.5 hours). The food, wine, architecture and overall everyting there is much more cosmopolitan.

ok I´ll be fair to Stuttgart... the Christmas market is nice if you´ve never seen one and beer is excellent.

I don`t know which train you talking about, but the fastest existing train takes

3,5 -4 hours from Stuttgart to Paris.

If you have the same knowledge of Stuttgart as you have in trainrides, then I am not surprised that you have no idea how many things you can see in and around Stuttgart.

Back to the original question. I would go and visit the Alsace (France) and Switzerland. If you want to see other countries besides Germany. But wouldn`t travel to much around, because you just have a week time. I would go to Straßburg.
