How easy of a drive would it be to drive from Stuttgart to Merano Italy? Is there train service to Merano from Stuttgart?

When? You have to cross the Alps.

If you plan a one way rental note that these come normally with prohibitive international drop off fees.

By train is possible, but no direct services. You'll have to change trains in Munich and Bozen.
