Stuttguart to Innsbruck with a stop at Neuschwanstein Castle

In late September, I will be joining a tour group in Innsbruck. However, prior to that I want to spend a couple of days in Stuttguart and also visit the Neuschwanstein Castle. Could you suggest an air/train/car itineary from Miami? Thanks.

First, airlines: Delta flies into Stuttgart daily nonstop from Atlanta. Other airlines require transfers in Europe, probably Frankfurt, London or Amsterdam being most optimal. When visiting the USA we now almost always take an ICE train from Stuttgart to the Frankfurt airport and back, as flying Delta does not put us close to our US destinations (non-SE USA). The ICE train is a little over an hour.

In Stuttgart, I would suggest taking either the city walking or bus tour (preferably bus) to see most of the inner city sights. These tours are run by the tourist information office across the street from the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) and you will learn the history of Stuttgart. Both Mercedes Benz and Porsche have free museums, the excellent Mercedes Benz one will appeal to everyone while Porsche's will appeal mostly to their enthusiasts. The Markthalle (Market Hall) is worth visiting for the sights and smells of wonderful food from all over the world. Wilhelma is the largest combination zoo-botanical gardens in Europe and has wonderful Moorish architecture. Stuttgart also has the second largest mineral springs in Europe.

Accessable by local transportation is the largest perfectly preserved Baroque palace in Germany at Ludwigsburg with its extensive gardens (S-4 or S-5). The old town center of Esslingen (S-1) is also very picturesque.

Stuttgart's Volksfest auf dem Cannstater Wasen (Germany's second largest beer festival) is from 23Sept-8Oct.

The above should easily take up all your short time, but there are also many museums including the Staatsgalerie for art, excellent opera and ballet, and musical events.

There are also many excellent places to visit close to Stuttgart. If you were then to drive to Neuschwanstein, you could make a short detour to the excellent walled city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber for a half day visit before taking the autobahn to Fuessen and Neuschwanstein. Many companies have one-way rentals in Germany without extra charges, so you could drop off the car there and continue your journey to Innsbruck by bus and/or train.
