I am trying to figure out whether/ when to visit my son during his exchange year. Originally we had planned to meet up at relatives' in Scandinavia, but now I am learning that the winter break is fairly short. Is this accurate? How long do students study in January? If we went in December-January, it would be 2 weeks in Scandinavia and 1 week in Germany, probably; otherwise we would be in Scandinavia for late June and July, traveling to Germany while he still has classes...right?
I am totally baffled as to the Heidelberg U. lecture/study/exam schedule between now and next August. (This is exacerbated by trying to figure out when the winter term "starts." This is such an easy thing to figure out in the US...) I know the German system has changed since I was an exchange student and friends in Germany actually had to return for finals in September (when we were finished in May!) but what I understand is that there is a short Christmas break, followed by a long break sometime from February (what?) until sometime in...March? I don't want to interfere with his long Interrail travels (I was once there, too) but I don't want to interfere with his exam prep, either. I can't find much detail on the university websites but perhaps I am not looking in the right places. Any help anyone who has first-hand knowledge can provide to this baffled parent would be much appreciated!
