Idea for short vacation around Karlsruhe

We will be in Karlsruhe in early July for work and would like to extend our stay for 3-4 days for a short vacation. I'm considering a spa at Baden-Baden but could also be interested in another vacation destination. I haven't purchased air tickets yet so it is possible to fly from Frankfurt or Stuttgart to a fairly close vacation spot and then book my return flight from there. (For example, if a budget airline offered good one way rates from FRA or STR to a coastal area in Spain, France, etc.) Doe anyone have suggestions for a close to Karlsruhe vacation spot or somewhere easy to get to from Karlsruhe by air?

Black Forest or the Alsace are close by options.

Instead of budget flights from FRA or STR I would in first place check for budget flights from FKB (Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport aka Baden-Airpark).

Personally I find the Upper Rhine Plain (Karlsruhe) in July hot enough. No desire to travel somewhere even warmer.

There are spas in Karlsruhe, and others nearby such as Bad Schonborn and Hockenheim. They are quite nice, although not as special as Baden-Baden. They are also good evening activities.

Heidelberg is less than one hour north.

Of course, Alsace. Strasbourg is the "star" but Wissembourg is small but also lovely and closer.

I would suggest less yo go to Frankfurt or other larger city, since you will miss the charm of smaller German/French areas.

Well, if you are thinking of a vacation by the sea, why not on Germany's largest lake, Lake Constance (Bodensee), which will have more than enough excellent things there and nearby to last you over a month ( www.bodensee.eu , the official but not very good website). Meersburg ( www.meersburg.de ) is the loveliest town on the lake with Germany's oldest castle, and the Swiss Alps are just across the lake. You can reach there inexpensively by train using a Baden-Wuerttemberg day train ticket for 26€ for two which includes all public transportation within this state (where Karlsruhe is at),- buses, trams, U-bahns, S-bahns, regional trains- except the fast long-distance IC, EC and ICE trains. For other things to see and do in this German state, have a look at what I wrote in #1 of tripadvisor.com/…46656711 . If you rent a car, the towns along the Alsatian Wine Route at the base of the Vosges Mountains in France are great, just one beautiful small town or village after another with well-kept old buildings, wineries and flowers, and of course great food.
