What to do in Coburg? |
|
My family is from Coburg and we are going there is December. Can anyone suggest how many days we would need there to see it fully? Any tips on good things to do while there? Of course we are going to try to visit our family that is still there, despite the language barrier. But other than that I am not sure. Any help you could give would be appreciated!

Actually - I do not know that much about Coburg. It has a theathre and an old part of town - which ist certainly worth going there. I would guess you would not need more than a full day to see the sights. But you have some major attractions around: the twon of Bamberg (very old city with lot of old church buildings) and Bayreuth - home of the wordl famous Wagner-festival. You can visit the Wagner theathre and the old opera house. Also Schloss Thiergarten is a nice garden area. Otherwise, this area is known for the many different kinds of beer and a rather unhealthy taste for lot of meat ;-) Nurenberg is another opportuinity to see some old German town and also some Nazi architechture. Enjoy! Markus Report as inappropriate

I'm a Tour Director and Germany specialist and offer 2 christmas tours to Germany, Austria and the Czech republic. Coburg has a lovely Christmas market also Bamberg and the Hummel Goebel Factory is nearby in Roedenthal. Check out VIP Alpine Tours website and your stay in Coburg could be added on to my tour from Munich. Bernie Report as inappropriate

Been to Corburg a couple of times, the first time when it was close to the West/East Germany border and the jumping off point for illegal border crossings. Was very interesting then. There might still be some remnants of the old fortifications. More recently, toured the Corburg sights (nice market square and city hall, a castle and then nearby Sonneberg (30km, toy making center, toy museum); Vierzehnheiligen ( 20km, church of pilgrimage near Staffelstein, interesting abbey church); also nearby Kloster Banz (monastery, nice view, used to have good restaurant, DK if still); Bamberg (45 km, old city, famous cathedral) If you want to enjoy the area, you could spend as much as 4-5 full days in C. and vicinity. I've been to Coburg often in the past visiting friends who have lived there since before WWII. Definitely a great walking city--central Platz has a TI and a museum. The palace there is the birthplace of Queen Victoria's consort, Prince Albert Saxe-Coburg. Do take that tour through the building and grounds as it remains in family hands, I believe, and all is original and well-furnished. There is also a large fortified castle on the hill above Coburg. If you are driving, please get directions to the pilgrimage church "Vierzehnheiligen" (Fourteen Holies) north of Bamberg. This is one of the great beyond belief Baroque churches. he entire area used to be off the beaten track due to its proximity ot the East German border. Look for a pre-reunification map to see how surrounded it was by the East. There used to be guard towers and the infamous no-man's land complete with barbed wire fences and guard dogs along the border. At my last visit, there was virtually no sign of these anymore. I don't know about hotels and restaurants as I am always visiting friends. I can say that iCoburg is very fond of its beer and proud of its local Wurst, which is sold hot from grills in the central Platz on market days. If you can spend the $$, there is a four-star hotel connected to the Castle above the city. Guide books can give you more info . Enjoy your trip--this is a fast changing (reluctantly, according to the old-timers) region of Germany. I know there are plans to build a direct train link from Munich to Berlin through the region. I don't think it has been completed yet, there was some local opposition. Report as inappropriate

Loved the Goebel Factory near Coburg. http://www.mihummel.com/visit.asp The Castle was very nice but a little cold and windy in December for a Florida Family. The Wurst are also a must have!!!!! I Plan to visit the area again in a warmer time of year! We also have family from the area! Report as inappropriate

It sounds like you have gotten a lot of good ideas. Here are my thoughts on the matter: Coburg is situated in the northern part of Franconia (Franken in German), and Franconia is the most northern county in Bavaria. There are towns all over that area of great interest - like Bamberg, Wurzburg, and Kronach. Bayreuth is also a lovely town near Coburg. A day trip down there to see Richard Wagner's home and opera house might be fun too. There is this really cool lady who is an expert in all things Franconian, and she has private tours which cover just about anything you would want to see or do in Franconia. Her name is Eva Roedl and she is WONDERFUL!! Check out her website: If you don't see a tour you like on her website, talk to her and she'll custom tailor a day for you!
