Best route from Chamonix or Les Houches to Nice, France

Hi, I will be with my family in Chamonix on August 30. We will have a trip to Aiguilles de midi in the morning. Then, in the afternoon, we will head to Nice, France. We will stay for one night in a hotel on our way, for a rest. My questions are:

1- What is the best route from Chamonic to Nice in my case (Kindly provide details, for me, to understand it?

2- Where shall we stay for the one night rest on our way?

Many thanks,

Michel Nohra

Your best bet is to use viamichelin.com to get a route.

You can set parameters for cheapest, fastest shortest etc.

I'm using google maps that may provide me with the same details. I had found the following three routes:

1- 497 km (5hours, 32mins) Chamonix-Aosta-Alessdria (E27-E25-A26)

2- 520 km (5h, 42 mins) Chamonix- Albertville A430- Turin E717

3- 484 km (6h, 22 mins) Chamonix- Albertville- GRENOBLE- Chateau Arnoux

We will leave Chamonix in the afternoon toward Monaco.

2- Where shall we stay for one night rest on our way?

Many thanks to (redzed1),

I have only ever driven it in one shot so really cannot recommend anywhere to stay.

The only route I have used is via Grenoble which is OK.

But other than that I really would not know which is fastest or cheapest.

The historic Route Napoleon covers part of the journey you're looking at, if that's of interest:

The absolute classic trip is the Route des Grandes Alpes, but that is apparently about 5 days:

The viamichelin site is actually better than google for precise route planning (IMO, anyway) as you can set more parameters and the map gives much better route detail. It's worth using both!

As for an overnight stop, when you've found your route, just select somewhere at about the right time split and see what's available!

I would say that the two helpful posters above have helped you enough.

In addition, I have driven the N85 (Route Napoleon) between Grenoble and Gap. It is a lovely road and a nice place to stop overnight would be Corps.

I also prefer Google maps as it works better with Mac browsers. The route I would suggest is the following:

We just finished the drive IN reverse direction and went via Savonna, and jus before Genoa took the tollway to Alessandia and on to Aosta. It was rain all the way but quite an easy and fast trip. ENJOY.
