Apartment a bit up the hill or in the vieille ville?

Hello

We are trying to decide on an apartment for a week in August. Debating wether to be up the hill a bit ( rue Col du Caire) with A/C and a pool or in the vielle ville closer to the beach, cafés, boulangeries etc. with out A/C except for one nice apartment.

What would be your thoughts on the location and if A/C is needed in August.

Thanks

Hi Bob

its possible that villefranche has some odd cooling problem due to its bowl shape

Normally in old towns with narrow streets, you get the warm air rising from the narrow dark streets due to the temperature differential between ground and super hot roofs , meaning that the ground level is substantially cooler- especially in streets that stay shaded due to narrow width and height of the houses

unlike some of the other medieval old towns around, the houses in villefranche don;t seem to to have as many air passages and air grills as are found in places like Old Nice ,which are designed to harness the sea breezes and provide what is a called a primitive type of a/c though it is really a temperature stabilization method.since it tends to make the houses less cold in winter

The airshafts etc also contribute to the noise in old Nice

air-shafts etc which contribute to the noise

Newer parts of Nice were also built with the summer cooling effect in mind, much to the disgust of the victorian tourists who would have preferred houses and hotels that were warm in winter

Older local people will wet the stones around their houses /terraces etc if possible in order to get a swamp cooler/evaporation effect , also this is sometimes done on tiled floors inside.
