Getting around the Cote d' azur in France

Hi we are going to Frejus in September and we are debating on booking a car. The thing is as there are 4 adults and 2 baby's we need a large car which is about £700(almost as much as the holiday) for ten days plus petrol money. If you have been here did you hire a car and if not then how did you get around. We are actually staying at La Baume in Frejus. If we don't hire a car the transfers are about £250 and we somehow want to visit places such as Nice, Monaco and St Tropez.

Frejus is on the Nice - St Raphael direct train service - a lot less hassle than car hire - but you have a large number of people in tow!

Nice - Cannes is 12 euro adult return Nice - Frejus will be double on a distance basis - times seven - youre looking at an equation that suggest car hire is dear but not so much dearer given the number of people travelling...

Hi Gemmaz1,

Nice to Frejus is almost 1 1/2hrs by train, and I think you need to get a taxi from the airport to the train station (maybe an expert can correct this if I'm wrong). Then with fares for day trips etc it does add up quickly.

GBP700 is very expensive for car hire. This may be obvious but did you look at the price of hiring 2 small "supermini" size cars that would easily accommodate 2 Adults and 1 baby each. I know it makes the travelling around a bit less convenient but can also add flexibilty if (stereotype warning) the women want to go shopping for an afternoon and the boys can play with the babies on the beach.

Hi there,

Sounds like a car (s) would be easiest.

£700 sounds an awful lot to hire a 7 seater which I guess is what you'll need , even if that includes renting 2 baby seats.

Might be worth checking some of the cost comparison websites and looked at brokers with all inclusive deals

I usually do a trawl to find the best rate- it varies all the time.

Suggest :

www.travelsupermarket.com

www.kelkoo.co.uk- not ranked by price, so unfortunately have to look through the whole list

www.carhiresearch.co.uk

www.sunwheels.com

www.suncars.co.uk

www.alamo.co.uk- they are doing a free extra driver offer at moment

Another one to try is to go into the Norwich Union website, www.norwichunion.com, click on travel and then select "about to go on holiday" from the menu on the right hand side of the screen. This gives a link to the Holiday Autos website with a 10% discount on their standard price included.

Hope you are successful, and manage to find a saving!

There is a bus from la baume to frejus centre, the beach and st Raphael where it is easy to travel to St Tropez,Monaco , anitbes and cannes. The bus is only about every two hours but is cheap you can get a time table from reception. We booked a transfer with ATs that was expensive but efficient. Reception will ring for taxis and you can get to Carrefour by taxi to do your big shop. Taxis are expensive short journeu 20 euros!

Frejus is lovely and the beack at San Raphel is good!

Enjoy your trip!

Do niot be misled by the last posting. Travel from St Raphael to St Tropez is far from "easy", especially by road (there is no train connection between the two), as the road just gets so horrendously crowded.

We paid around £300 for a 'van' for two weeks with Holiday Autos (Nimes to Nimes) earlier in August. Ok, the van turned out to be a Seat version of a Golf Plus (ok for four adults and 1 teenager).

We visited Frejus - good beaches and a handy location next to St Raphael (good access to the motorway also).

We had a very pleasant (also huge quantities and cheap) meal in an Alsassienne restaurant facing the beach (across the road) in Frejus (can't recall the name).

Anyway, I would certainly get a car - but not at £700!!!... try holiday autos...

Hi we came back from la baume in frejus last tuesday.

We booked on line with Atlas choice and paid £190 for a week for a 5 seater. They used SIXT company and were actually cheaper than using SIXT direct.

As other postings suggest try shopping around on line it is not always cheaper to go direct to the company but always check your small print.

I would Atlas choice again.

I would also recommend a car if you are staying in la baume. I

f you are going to St Tropez drive to St Raphael and take the boat we paid 15 euros per adult the babys are free it not only saves the traffic queues which gets busy its a great day out and finish off at St Raphael which comes to life in the eveining.

It was one of the best days of our holidays.

Hi I have just come back from La Baume and would really suggest that you hire a car. If possible change to a different site with babies as La Baume is huge but of course thats up to you. It is worth having the car to go to the supermarkets to stock up carrefour is huge is about two - three miles from the site as is Geant the onsite shop is very very expensive handy for bread in the morning but thats about it. Definitely worth a car for that many people as to be honest the bus service is very poor yes there is a train from St Raphael but easier to put everyone in the car and go. Petrol in South of France is about the same as England or even slightly more expensive. With a car you can go and explore the lovely areas take the coastal road from Frejus to Cannes at night its just beautiful. Nice is fabulous in the old town section its just stunning but be warned lots of steep hills and try to get there very early in the morning. Cannes is worth a visit just to see the yachts moored up. St Tropez is practically impossible to drive to better to drive to Port Grimaud or St Raphael and catch a boat which is part of the holiday, the traffic to St Tropez can be anything up to four hours for what is not a very long journey. So definitely yes hire a car and then you have freedom to do what you want you will need it to eat out etc La Baume as you will find is out in the middle of nowhere. The nearest supermarket is Leder Price which is about a 1.5 k walk but on a horrifically busy road that links to the A8 toll road. Hope this helps sorry its a bit long winded but its all things I wish someone had told me! Frejus has plenty of free car parks you just have to look out for them and go there in the morning. St Raphael has a night market which is heaving but I think that finishes in August which is a shame as its lovely.

Hi we drove to Frejus and the roads were very busy however in September you might find a little quieter. We drove to St Tropez which should of took 40 mins and ended up taking 3 hours there & 2 back a day almost wasted.

You can travel by train to Cannes,Nice & Monaco which are definately worth a visit from Frejus station which is 15 mins by car from La Baume.

As the last poster said, traffic will be a lot easier in september - you should find roads are totally different to July August!

I also suggest hiring 1 large car or 2 smaller ones; prices vary hugely, but even with baby seats included you should be able to find a better price.available

Have a great time!
