Cannes 1st week in April ? Advice 1st timers

Hi there,

Am looking at a possible trip to Canne in the 1st week of April with my mum. Having done some research I have come across some reasonable hotel rates & flights which would otherwise be off limits in high season. Could anyone advice on Canne being a suitable area for a nice weeks break at this time of year. Other options would be Nice? Although the hotels in Canne seem a little bit more modern. Our main concern is the weather and things being in shut down mode. looking at 2nd-9th. Also if there will be enough to do in Canne for a week?

I have never actually visited france but thought this coast line may be a good option for the weather.

We have a budget of around £1200 for 2 with £600 of that being spent on the hotel & flights.

Any advice/ tips or recommendations for other areas that may be more suitable for a girls holiday will be appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

If you check with www.destination-cannes.net/cannes-congress/ you will see that an event is being held in Cannes starting on the 8th of April and this may have already effected the hotel prices and availablility for your provisional 2-9 april stay.

Cannes has many events of all different sizes and I think this one may be popular.

There is already a lot of good advice on this forum by regular Cannes Destination experts and on the right side of this forum you can click on "SOOOZE" and look at the topics to see which would be relevent to you.

However the weather in April I suspect is not what you would be expecting , June is very pleasant - up to 27c and Cannes is not too busy

Cannes has a central area with many of the hotels (and apartments) and railway station within and you can walk from one end to the other within 20 mins and its easy to travel along the coast.

One of the problems many posters here seem to have is getting from Nice airport to Cannes and what appears to be a budget fare can prove not to be the case if you need to leave at the crack of dawn or arrive very late. It is possible by train and bus but at these hours a taxi (about 80 euros) would be needed or a stay at a Nice airport hotel.

I use the train from London and have no such problems, Eurostar, cross Paris by fast line Metro and then sit back upstairs 1st class (not much extra) and enjoy he French scenery on the TGV. See www.seat61.com for rail travel and timetable and booking info.

I would say that there is plenty to do in Cannes and surrounds for a week in early April. Weatherwise, it is impossible to predict and if you are lucky you might get a few days on the beach, but be prepared for less settled weather too.

Cannes is usually a great base and offers excellent accommodation choices, amenities, beaches and public transport all in a small central area

However hadlow is correct in saying that this year, a large congress (MipTV) is scheduled from 8th to 11th April ( a smaller offshoot MipDOC starts on 6th) so accommodation may be expensive and in short supply for some of the dates you are thinking of.

Also agree with the general advice to try to avoid "budget " very early or late flights which require you to take a relatively expensive taxi to or from Nice airport to your destination, wherever you stay on the Riviera.

Hi Hadlow,

Many thanks for your reply.

Yes had thought something was happening as seemed rather full.

Will have a look at the train option as does sound good. & will have a good look through back on all the old posts.

With regards to the weather I was thinking anything of about 18 degrees upwards would be fine. Do you think this would be likely ? Would love to stay in June but sadly can only stay in April.

Would you happen to know what the average cost of meal would be in the evening? Nothing to fancy but say 2 main courses a glass of wine and a couple of soft drinks ? Just trying to work out if we will need to take tins of baked beans with ... ha ha !

Thanks again..

April weather is usually delightful - warm and sunny and a few showers to encourage the prolific flowers of the area to grow. Perfect for walking and sightseeing and indeed sunbathing ( altho the sea is not warm enough for swimming - unless you are from Scandanavia).

As an alternative to Cannes try Antibes or Juan les Pins or Mandelieu - everywhere on the coast is easily reached by train - e.g Monaco is just over an hour from Cannes.

Just adding re your meal query. I would budget 35 - 40 euro per person for an 'average' dinner including a 'pichet' (jug) of Vin de Pays du Var - local wine. But of course you can go well up from this. Some places on the Croisette in Cannes wouldnt blink an eye at 150 euro up (pp).

In the Old Towns of Antibes, Cannes or Nice the best thing is to stroll around and study the blackboards outside. Watch the wine Carte which will add to the bill greatly - people are often surprised that restaurant wine costs more than in London's Soho but many restauranteurs subsidise the food that way.

By far the best value is the Formule (set 3 course) Lunch which will run 15 - 20 euro often including a glass of wine.

Forget the baked beans

For around the cost of transporting a few tins in the Easjet hold , an evening main course, a half pichet of wine can be found easily for less than 30 Euros per person, though not perhaps on the Croisette itself.

A three course evening meal without wine will start at around 25 euros or so

Looks like you are getting good eating out price advice but for diatry reasons for 2 years we book an apartment of which there are many and then self cater. Plenty of choice in the large covered food market and the one small one. Also 3 supermarkes scattered arround the central area and many other bakers and small supermarkets. We spend less than £250 for a week for 2 and food is about 50% dearer than UK.

If you are going to look at the train option you should consider that the 5 hours from Paris to Cannes is a sight seeing tour, 3 hours to reach the south coast then a gental 2 hours mostly right next to the sea.

But TGV tickets (and Eurostar) tickets for April (to 16) are already on sale and prices go up as the trains get booked.

We last paid £59 each, eurostar (over 60's) and about £75 each first class on TGV to give you an idea of what it could cost. We also stop over in Paris at about £100 for b&b for 2 of us and dont have to get up to London early.
