Trips from Avignon as a Base, centrally located hotel

We are planning a trip to South France this June.

We don't like to drive in Europe.

We are planing to fly from the USA to an airport close to Nice or Avignon (which one would you recommend?), stay a few days in Nice, and a few days in Avignon (using the train to arrive from one city to another), and in each city take organized Day Tours to see the area.

Is this doable? Are there enough organized Day Tours from each of these cities?

We plan to take the train to Paris after about a week or 10 days in Nice and Avignon Recommendations very welcome as to how long we should stay in each area.

We also need recommendations for 4 -5 star hotels in the center of each city, from which we can walk to see places. We need centrally located, nice hotels that can guarantee a Non -Smoking room.

Any comment/advice?

P.S We always got great advice from Trip Adviser in all trips we took. The advice never failed us!! Thanks!

Flying into the Nice airport is usually a pleasant experience; it's small and user-friendly. For a hotel, have a look at the Lapérouse, a very fine hotel with a Provençal. The deluxe sea-view rooms are lovely, and the views are amazing. There's a swimming pool surrounded by lemon trees, and on the top terrace you get panoramic views. The small gym must have about the best view anywhere. The hotel is an easy walk from the Cours Saléya, the center for restaurants and the open-air market. Place Masséna is within easy walking distance.

I recommend staying in Nice for at least 5 days so that you can sample all the city's attractions and make short trips to see St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Biot, Antibes, and more. All are reachable by bus or train. If you get a good guidebook (I recommend the Michelin Green Guide to the Côte d'Azur) you don't really need to take tours, as it's easy to get around on your own. However, the Nice Tourist Office has excellent information on tours if you decide to go that route.

Avignon has two outstanding hotels, the Hôtel d'Europe and the La Mirande. Either should work well for you.

All hotel rooms in France are by law non-smoking now.
