TGV train

My husband and I would like to take the high-speed TGV train from Paris to Avignon. Would appreciate advice on how to book tkts. online as well as how to get from Charles deGaulle Airport to Paris train station (Gare de Lyons?)

Kim, on the top right corner of the main France forum page are "top questions", including information on buying train tickets. tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g187070-i12-France…

CDG has a TGV station, but you will have more choice from Gare de Lyon.

Another helpful site is Paris by Train http://parisbytrain.com/

There are a number of TGVs each day from CDG to Avignon. If one of these is at a suitable time, it would be much easier than going to Gare de Lyon.

If you do decide to take a train from Gare de Lyon, the easiest way of getting there is by Air France bus rather than the RER train.

You need to allow a minimum of 3 hours between scheduled arrival of your plane and departure of a train from CDG, or 4 hours from Gare de Lyon.

For the best prices, book direct with the train operator as far ahead as possible. Tickets go on sale 3 months before travel, and the cheapest tickets often sell out quickly. The discounted prices keep going up as the travel date gets closer.

You can get train times and costs, and make bookings, in English at www.tgv-europe.com/en but use Antarctic as the "Ticket collection country" in the first screen to avoid being transferred to RailEurope, which usually has higher prices and does not list all the trains. For notes on online booking, see www.nickbooth.id.au/Tips/FrenchTrain.htm

If you have problems buying from tgv-europe, www.capitainetrain.com is a private website which links directly to the SNCF ticketing system. It is only in French, but translate.google.com would probably allow you to follow it. www.loco2.com is a UK site, so there is a small conversion cost from € to £, but it is in English and has French prices.
