Caen to Avignon

We will be traveling from Caen to Avignon in mid June and will have a rental car in Caen. Is it advisable to drive to Paris (from which we will have picked up our rental care) and take the TGV from Paris to Avignon or would you advise returning the car in Caen (and paying a drop fee charge) and taking a train from Caen to Paris and then from Paris to Avignon? Or is there another option by train?

There typically is no one-way drop fee charge for rental cars within France.

Bear in mind that the train from Caen will arrive at Paris Gare St-Lazare, and the train for Avignon will depart from Gare de Lyon, so you would have to get yourselves and your luggage across Paris by Metro or taxi.

Direct trains to Avignon leave from both Gare de Lyon and CDG. I would suggest that you return the car at one of those locations. If you decide on Gare de Lyon, make sure you know the exact location for the return: it will be in a nearby underground car park.

Drop your car at Rennes Airport, about two hours drive from Caen. Take a cheap Air France flight direct to Marseille-Provence Airport taking one hour 20 minutes, then take the one hour train connection from that airport to Avignon Centre marseille-airport.com/access-car-parks/acces… for about €17 (booking neither required nor possible).

Alternatively, drop your car in Caen and take the train. Neither driving to the Gare de Lyon nor driving all the way around to the other side of Paris at CDG airport is in my view even a remotely enjoyable option.

Thank you, all.

I noticed the transfer time at Mantes La Jolie is 12 minutes. Is that typically enough time to make the transfer? We each will have one suitcase and a carry on and no mobility issues but wanted to make sure this is doable.
