Avignon to Milan via Lauterbrunnen

We are thinking of renting a car in Avignon and driving to Lauterbrunnen in one day and then continuing to Milan after a few days in Lauterbrunnen.

We are looking for advice on whether it makes sense to drive or take the train. We will need to arrive in Lauterbrunnen on the same day we leave Avignon. Same for the Lauterbrunnen to Milan leg.

Thanks!

Is this a race? It's 6.5 hours and 4.5 hours respectively. You will pay a huge one way drop fee if you drop your French rental car in Italy.

We did the reverse last September, traveling from Lauterbrunnen to Arles (via Avignon) by train in one day. It's a long trip, with 4 changes of train along the way. Things were further compounded in southern France, on our last leg, when some mishap stopped our train and all announcements were made in French. While we eventually got there, it's not a trip I'd care to repeat.

Just be aware of the distances and timings involved.
