Is there any public transport inside the ramparts? If I am staying on the northern side of Avignon away from the train stations what is the best way to get to the train station. We do not mind walking but not 6 ks everytime we want to catch a train. Any suggestions?

From the northern edge of the walls to Avignon Ville train station is no more than 1.3 km.

There's one station just by the town walls, and the main TGV station is a short distance away. If you look at the top right of this page, you'll find a link about how to take a shuttle into town, close to the town railway station.
As Nick says, it's not far to walk into town from the town railway station. You can download a map of Avignonand other useful items from this website, as well as plenty of info; you'll pass the TO walking in to town from the town station:
If you were led to believe the walk is long, could be that they were referring to the Avignon TGV train station. Without an actual address of where you are staying, it is hard to know.
A walk from the center of Avignon to the Gare TGV would be long and filled with vehicle traffic, making walking a bit unsafe, IMO.
If you are actually staying within the Avignon city walls and you wish to go to the Avignon Gare Centre Ville, as has been said, it is a pleasant walk.
Simply put in your projected address in Google maps! You'll not only see the 'lay of the land' but if you pull the little yellow stick figure onto any street highlighted in blue as you do it, you can do a virtual walk of the route using Streetview. It will even give you walking directions.
