Impromptu biking trip to the Loire Valley!

My wife asked for a biking trip in the Loire Valley for her 50th bday.

I just found availability, using miles, to fly this Thursday to Paris (yes, within two days!).

This is the plan in my mind:

- Take the train to a smaill charming town, let's say, Blois.

Stay there for 2 nights and each day do day biking trips in the surroundings.

- Then take the train to another town, like,Tours or Amboise, and stay there another 2 nights and do day biking trips.

Does this makes sense? Are these towns nice spots to stay and bike around?

I have read there are tours that transport your luggage so you bike from town to town but seem like a pricey option.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated, specially giving the short time frame!

Blois is probably biking headquarters for the Loire Valley.

Try this link as well:

I wouldn't use Tours as a base to bike because of the huge agglomeration of development around it, although it has a very pretty old downtown. Your idea to use Blois and Amboise as bases is fine. You can take your bikes on the trains to move from town to town but you will likely find it easier to just rent a different bike in each place.

Thanks so much Sarastro and French Mystique for your recomendations!

One more quick question:

Any other little charming town in the Loire you recomend to stop over for a night or so?

Saumur, always, it is lovely! (and if you like Horses, visit the Cadre Noir!)

Well, if you've only got two nights and you're already spending one in Blois and one in Amboise I don't know that you've got time for any more. There are lots of charming towns in the Loire (or in any region of France) but I suppose a few more of the best known ones in the Loire would be Loches, Chinon and Montresor among many:

Ah I thought the OP was planning on 2 nights in Blois, 2 nights in Amboise...

He has not said how long his trip is to be alltogether though F_M, and you have a good point there. Without knowing that, I really should not have suggested anywhere else, eh!

No EW, I misread the post and it seems the OP has 4 nights there.

To the OP, I don't know how experienced you are as bikers but make sure you get some maps not only so you know where you're going but so you can read the topography and know what kind of hills you might encounter. The IGN series maps (Institut Géographique National) show topography and the Michelin maps will put gradient arrows on roads with a gradient of more than 5%.

Here are the links for the Michelin maps:

The maps can be bought in many places such as bookstores, news stands, magazine stores, larger supermarkets, department stores, hypermarkets and in the full service rest areas on the autoroutes, just to name a few.

Soooorry for not being clear!

Ok, we have a total of 9 nights sin France; we were thinking on spending between 4 to 6 in the Loire Valley, kind of play it by ear, and the rest in Paris. The one who drives this itinerary is my wife since she asked for a biking trip for the Loire Valley for her 50 bday, so I will be following her wishes (A man what to do, what a man what a do! LOL).

And yes, she's a pretty experienced biker, I don't do it that often but I have pretty good fitness endurance for doing zumba and dancing salsa regularly :)

Not on the Loire but not too far away from it, and 'en route' back to Paris, consider Chartres Perhaps?

A lovely Cathedral, rather than a Chateau, an old town down below, plenty of opportunity for walks and cycling and a slightly 'different' bit of France!

Hello again my dear loire experts!

We are currently in Amboise which we have enjoyed so much.

We have three more nights here in the Valley and are debating if spending them in Saumur or Blois.

Which one would you recommend because of being more charming and with best biking scenery?

(We could also spend 2 nights and 1 in both if you say so)

Thanks so much!
