Confused? Is Pays de la Loire in the Loire Valley?

We are traveling through the Loire Valley and I can't seem to find out anywhere - is Pays de la Loire in the Valley area? If we stayed there are we close enough to the Vineyards and Chateau's of the Loire Valley?

You can see a map of Pays-de-la-Loire here: map-of-france.co.uk/map-of-pays-de-la-loire.…

Although it surrounds part of the Loire river, it is west of the area with chateaux. For those, you need to be in the area around Tours or Blois.

La Loire is the longest river in France. However, usually when the Loire Valley is referred to on these Forums the term relates to that small part of its valley where there are a cluster of Renaissance Chateaux, which is actua;;y mainly in the Centre Region.

"Pays de Loire" is the administrative name of one of the "Régions" in France, the way there is Rhône-Alpes or Midi-Pyrénées. It has no relevance except for government purposes, does not refer to the old "provinces" or even to the sites to visit in the area.

"Loire Valley" is a marketing term - it's an easy tag to use with people who don't know France. It doesn't really mean anything, but people from other countries think it means "that bit of France with the Grand Chateaux".

Tell a French person you are visiting (or live in) the "Loire Valley" and they will have little or no idea of where you are talking about. For the main part the French still identify themselves with the pre-revolution territories as being where they come from - Touraine, Gascony, Berry, etc.

But to your original Question - the Loire River flows through the Pays de la Loire, so that part of the region which is the river valley of the Loire is, in strictest sense, the Loire Valley. Though so is the part 1100km away which the river flows through....

It's like saying the Napa River Valley versus Napa County versus the term "California Wine Country"....

There's the actual river valley itself (the Loire/Napa River), which is located (partly) within a government area (Pays de Loire/Napa Co.), which is located within a pretty nebulous region named for tourism marketing (CA Wine Country/the Loire)

That's not 100% exact, but it should at least give you a parallel.

<<"Loire Valley" is a marketing term>>

This area has been heavily marketed by French tourist interests, particularly around the town of Amboise, ever since the former mayor of Blois, Jacques Lang, become an interior minister and influenced the spending of millions of euros for no other reason than to draw in tourists.

Only 15 to 20 years ago one could visit châteaux in relative calm, in fact few American tourists even knew of their existence. Now there are shiny brochures all over Paris explaining the wonders of the Loire Valley, filling bus loads of tourists from all over the world and packing these properties and filling coffers with entrance fees.

Marketing is progress.

The French word ¨Pays¨, (pronounced pay-ee as in someone who receives payment) simply means region or country.
