One Day in Le Havre - what to do?

I would appreciate suggestions on how to spend the one day we will have while docked in Le Havre. We have never been to this part of France, so all suggestions are appreciated.

The old town was completely bombed during WWII so Le Havre is a modern city, now listed on the UNESCO world heritage list for its modern architecture. Surprisingly we liked the city while driving though it once.

But coming from the New World where modern cities are everywhere, you might find the nearby town of Honfleur far more appealing: old cobble stone streets and half-timbered houses, charming seaport...

Stay in Le Havre, visit the Art Museum and see the largest collection of Impressionist Art outside of Paris.

Walk the streets of Le Havre and admire the Auguste Perret post-war concrete Architecture that makes Le Havre a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Take a bus or a taxi and go to Honfleur for the day.

Take a bus or a taxi and go to Etretat to admire the much painted cliffs.

Go a bit further to Fecamp and test the Benedictine

Here is the link for the bus that runs between Le Havre and Honfleur:

You can take line 20 or 50, depending on the times. You might also consider taking the bus from Honfleur to the nearby towns of Deauville and Trouville. These towns are separated by a harbor and you can walk between the two.

Here is the link for buses between Le Havre and Etretat and Fécamp:

I think your options are:

1) LeHavre and Honfleur

2) Honfleur and Deauville/Trouville

3) Etretat and Fécamp

Another suggestion is that you peruse or search the Le Havre forum, as pretty much every other thread asks what to do from a Cruise stop - there are many other great suggestions out there already, just waiting for you to find them.

^^ Quite true. And you also haven't mentioned what date you'll be in LeHavre, which would help with suggestions.

Just wandering around the town isn't very inspiring as you need a guide to appreciate the subtleties of the apparently uninterseting concrete blocks.

I'd sugest getting a taxi to the tourist office (it's practically at the far side of town) and buy a booklet about the architecture, about 3€. Go left along the sea front to the Malraux art museum. After that follow the guide book around town, not missing the concrete St Julian church, and get lunch. Finish up at the Maison de l'armateur (shipbulders house). It's one of the few old houses to have survived the war and has been renovated. The building was built around a hexagonal light well. The ground floor was where the carriage entered and there were stables.

From there you are a short stroll from the ship.

Malreaux is closed on Tusdays.

Many thanks, I will follow up your suggestion. Is public transport difficult?

There's ashuttel that takes cruise passengers to the town center. There are city buses around town but if you don't know where you are going there not very usefull.

10. Re: One Day in Le Havre - what to do?

if you want to get the bus to Honfleur I think your best option is the carte liberté 13.20€ which allows you to travel during the day and applies on the section Le Havre - Honfleur.

The problem with getting a bus is the limited time table.

Other options are the ships excursion, renting a car from rentacar, or a taxi.
