"Also, I’ve read about the high-speed rail from Figueres to Perpignan – Would that be the rail to take from Barcelona into France? Or are there other better routes?"

There are two ways to go by train from Figueres to Perpignan and beyond :

1. regular train from Barcelona to Figueres, change to high-speed train in Figueres-Vilafant. The train continues to Montpellier and Paris

2. fast train from Barcelona to Perpignan with the Talgo which runs along the coast via Portbou and Cerbere. The train continues to Montpellier which is its final stop. The advantage is that it is more scenic and you don't have to change trains until you get to Montpellier.

See www.tgv-europe.com for timetables including journey from Montpellier to Avignon/Aix/Marseille, etc.

We walk near the main line between Perpignan and Montpelier a lot and have never seen Talgo trains from Barcelona to Montpelier nor seen them advertised/promoted on the SNCF website.

How often do they run a day?

We are travelling on Saturday between Agde and Figures on Saturday.

It would have been useful to have known your travel dates

Vueling fly Barcelona to Nice for about 50 Euros one way in April if booked reasonably in advance, and they have a good flight time. This is probably significantly cheaper (and quicker) than the train. The flight item is 1 hour and 15 minutes. Air France also have good prices but flight time may not be as good. Iberia are generally much more expensive.

There is also the slow local train service along the coast. There is a train about every two hours from Barcelona to Cerbère, on the French side, through Girona Figueres. From Cerbère, there are local trains to Perpignan, Narbonne and beyond. These are slow, but cheap and do not have reservations etc so you would always get on.

Times on the Spanish side

and on the French side

You may need two separate tickets but there is plenty of time between trains at Cerbere.
