Prices for car hire from Carcassone airport have jumped to £250 this week! Looking to hire from Saturday 27th at 1pm for a week. Any advice?

Visit the Autoeurope US site (not the UK site). Smaller cars cost around US$150-200 depending on the exact class and desired coverage.

Nobody knows how much risk you are prepared to take. If you don't buy the coverage, should anything happen to the vehicle, you could end up with a hefty bill.

Hi

I rent cars pretty regularly, but not in France !

I use http://www.rentalcars.com/ who not only offer good prices but have helped me out with good service, too (InterRent didn't have any cars even though it had been prepaid for 1 month - Rentalcars.com managed to get me a Hertz replacement at the same price within 30 minutes). Last week I had cars at €9 in Ibiza and £13 in Manchester.

The excess insurance situation has now changed. A few years ago the uninsured excess was around £500 and the daily cover was about £5 - so worth taking the risk if you were a frequent renter. Now the excess is around £1500 and the daily cover £15 - £20. £1500 is a big risk and the daily cover is more than the rental.

The way round this is to buy an annual policy from http://www.insurance4carhire.com/ which costs £39.99 for Europe (= under 3 days daily cover !). The cover is more extensive than the daily cover - it even covers putting the wrong fuel in the tank. Several of my friends have had claims and were very pleased with their service.

The one proviso is that the rental Co "authorises" your card to make sure you have enough money on the account. This is normally not a problem with a credit card, but you need to bear it in mind if using a debit card. It has the effect of reducing your available balance, even though the money doesn't leave the account, so you need to be good for the excess.

The authorisation is not removed immediately which is worth bearing in mind too - I returned one car and picked up another on the same day and both hit my authorised balance.
