I am a single female and I am looking to rent a safe apartment in Paris - I found this Apartment Rue Cardinal Mercier (Opera - Paris 9th) listed on both vrob and beau paris.

Has anyone stayed here? I have heard some nightmares about people renting on-line and I am nervous...also is the 9th district safe for a single female at night alone?? thank you for your help!

Hi

The reason you have found the studio listed on both is because beau-paris lists all their apts/studios on VRBO.com. As best I can tell beau-paris is another site where you will deal directly with the owner (like VRBO). Any comments I have seen for beau-paris seem to be favourable.

They have a Guestbook for the apts here

So if I was you I would not feel confident about dealing with Beau Paris.

I can see they have some nice looking options in St Germain, the Latin Quarter et that I would look at - now this is purely personal - as I prefer those areas.

Most central areas of Paris are 'safe'. Just follow the same common sense you use out and about at home and you'll be fine.

Thanks so much for your response! I did find the link you posted before but I was not sure about the area of the apartment - ie is it safe and it is centrally located. I googled and didnt find out much else about the place and got mixed reviews on the area. Thanks for letting me know that it would be safe but I am afraid it may be far from the center of the city, no? I had an offer for the 18 district for a one-bedroom for only 1000 Euro for five weeks...I am afraid it is too far and all those stairs my kill me. My budget is limited so I cant find apartments that are afforadble in the desirable areas such as 1, 5 and 6 as I am booking for next month.

Also I apologize but I am confused as you said this below which made me feel safe about dealing with VRBO

"The reason you have found the studio listed on both is because beau-paris lists all their apts/studios on VRBO.com. As best I can tell beau-paris is another site where you will deal directly with the owner (like VRBO). Any comments I have seen for beau-paris seem to be favourable."

But then you stated this

"So if I was you I would not feel confident about dealing with Beau Paris."

So you dont advise I rent from Beau Paris?

Thanks again!!!

Sorry rubyd1975

Too early here in the UK and I need more tea! That should have read I *would* be happy to deal with beau-paris! Infact I have just been looking at the site and thinking of using them myself.

My view is to look at what Metro stations you have near these various apartments and if they will get you where you want to go? The 18eme and 9eme are next too each other so it depends where in these areas. I think the issue with the area you are finding is because the red light district is nearby in Pigalle?

Am I understanding you need somewhere for five weeks? If one of the places in St Germain or the Latin Quarter fit your budget I would go there.

Did you do an availability search on their site

the area looks ok, not far from Place de Clichy. It wouldn't be my first choice, but it should be safe.

I just bought a flat in the 9th, near rue des Martyrs, and feel safe everywhere at night. I have a friend who lives in the 17th so at night i croos place de CLichy, no problem, but i am still cautious.

I have no problems with the 9th either. It is a "real neighborhood" which does not have much to attract tourists but has a lot for residents every day life. Stores are plentiful and strangely enough it is the arrondissement that has the most hotels.

Barbes Rochechouart is an area I am not fond of and also some of the streets going up to Montmartre are best left alone. Too many tourists and cheap stores.

The 9th has none of that. Rue Notre Dame de Lorette, rue Saint Goeorges and most street going up from back of Opera and department stores are fine.Rue des Martyrs is a great shopping street for fresh food.

Pigalle is not what it used to be. The hard stuff is not there anymore. You have families with kids living there which indicates that the neighborhood is definitely changing.

Thanks for your help! If I have a choice between the apartment in the 9th or an apartment in the 7th on the edge of the 15th near the Tower which do you think I would have a better experience in?

I'm sorry if I put you off the 9eme? As stated above it's an area where people live - rather than one best known for tourist haunts. Several posters here, who travel frequently to Paris, like to stay in the Montmartre area. As stated above Pigalle is not what it was which is why I asked if that was what you were reading.

I don't know the 7eme that well so maybe one of the locals will come back and comment. I would imagine it's fine - do you have a street or metro name?

At this point, as you seem to be staying for several weeks, I would go with the one that gives you the most in term of space and facilities, in the apartment and area, I'm presuming they're a similar price?
